Probably the most inspired set I witnessed all weekend, sadly the group ("We brought the whole band!" exclaimed Kevin Drew during the beginning of the 2nd song) was only given 45 minutes as the next-to-last act so they could start RHCP early and get it all over with by 10pm. They were an energetic, fun, partying bunch on that stage. It showed and carried over to the crowd.

Save for the openers on each day, every other band got an hour (headliners got 90 min). Most of those bands didn't have an hour's worth to give. A tragedy I tell ya. The crowd for BSS was going bonkers, they were loud and appreciative and didn't stop chanting for an encore for 10 minutes. There was no joy in mudville. :(

Is that really getting the shaft at a giant festival show? I hate RHCP as much as anybody, but 45 minutes is a decent set.

i heard similar complaints. it's weird to think that a band like gnarls barkley (one album clocking in at under 40 minutes + a handful of covers) got a whole hour and broken social scene didn't. whatever, though.

It is when all the other acts got the full hour, that's all I'm saying.

Z, I'd have to give props to the GB set tho. It was very good from both a musical and presentation standpoint.

Actually they wanted to start RHCP 15 minutes early. Check the schedules on the Lolla site to see what I mean.

i don't know how they are working their sets, but clearly Cee Lo has other material that fits in with their format that they can bring to the live show.

They played a great set, but at that point I was spent from the very long weekend and didn't need an additional 15 minutes.

I remembered Emily looking better when I saw Metric.

45 minutes seems like a long set for a festival show.

Yeah, but when I do it's really important shit, man! :D

Btw, here's a clip I located on Youtube of the end of their set: Clicky

The poster's info was wrong tho. The set was always scheduled for 45 min. I just thought they (and the crowd - listen to 'em!) got screwed on the deal.

Am I crazy or senile or did the headliners at the early 'paloozas play like at least 90 minutes?

I'm thinking of bands like Janes, RHCP, Ministry, Smashing Pumpkins, Primus, Beastie Boys, and Alice In Chains

Really? I don't think any of the main festivals have sets of less than 30 min, and that's just for the opening bands on the smaller stages.

At the Big Day Out, which had its genesis as a copy of Lolla, mainstage bands get at least 45-50 min, the last 3-4 bands 60 min, and the headliners at least 75 min. Most of the others a pretty similar to that too.

Half hour sets would be a bit of a pain in the arse wouldn't they when you have clashes but want to try to catch half a set from each band? You'd only end up with a couple of songs from each one

At least 60. Granted, the first two years you've only got 7-8 bands all day doing 30+ shows together over the whole summer. It's a different beast.

I saw BSS the next night at the Bleeding Kansas Festival and they were pretty stoked there too. They got about 45 minutes in Lawrence as well. My kids liked 'em enough which was kind of cool, as they are 3 and 6, but they really went nuts for Death Cab For Cutie - I'm sort of uncertain if I should be happy or sad about that fact actually.

In conclusion, anyone who doesn't like Broken Social Scene is wrong.
