I'm really liking it. The two albums aren't disjoined at all like I thought could be a possibility. For sure this album is going to rub tons of people the wrong way, and not just the people who despise Fiery Furnaces either (though, they will probably hate it more).
The first album--Winter Women has been described as a pop album, and I can understand that completely. Here we have Eels/Pavement influenced lyrical content, and singing stylings, with 60s harmonies echoing through a strange IDM blip blop of a waterfall. Sounds odd, but Friedberger makes it work. It sounds nothing like a Fiery Furnaces record, and frankly I'm glad. Bitter Tea this year hasn't gotten the spins, but I've enjoyed it immensely. I count this band of the Friedbergers as one of my favorite bands in the last 5 years.
The second album--Holy Ghost Language School is what Allmusic called the noise side. I don't see it. It is however a little more abrasive than Winter Women. More instrumental minded, the album coalesces into so much of a dance record (ok, maybe not for normal people). When I say dance I mean in terms of rhythm. If you like Philip Glass, or Stockhausen you'll eat this up with a spoon.
