new album again?

I think it's too soon.

He really needed to do some soul-searching after that last shitfest.

Won't this be a more subdued and folky album like Sea Change and Mutations, that seems to be his M.O.
They have tended to be his best albums.

I liked the last one...sort of an amalgamation of all his previous work. Looking forward to what's next.

I hope it's some sort of all-out New Age Prog-fest about Xenu and e-meters and psychically helping people find their missing fingernail clippers, sung entirely in Tone 40.

They are. Especially the former.

agreed, geuro was simply his first miss, hardly a shitfest.
this song and video underwhelmed me, though I did appreciate how Beck kind of looked like Jesus sometimes.

That new song is great, better than anything of Guero. Now I'm looking forward to the album.

It blows my mind that anyone would think Sea Change is Beck's best album. It's OK, but nothing on it is outstanding at all.

I thought Guero was annoyingly middling.

Midnite Vultures is pretty good but hasn't aged that well.

Mutations is the last thing he did that I still really like.

I agree with the above statements. I can only get through about half of Sea Change before I switch it off out of lack of interest. I generally do the same with Guero; Some of MV is still fun, but it really sounds dated to me. I still listen to Mellow Gold and Odelay quite a lot.

Sea Change was the first record Beck dug deeper lyrically. The arrangements were more interesting as well. That cross-pollination of sound that got Tony Berg @ Geffen all excited 12 years ago has worn out its welcome in my opinion. Beck's a talent for sure, I just wish he'd stop worrying about style, style, style and concentrate on what its like to be a human being.

I love Sea Change, but for different reasons than all the others.

Odelay holds up surprisingly well. And Guero sounds good on a bar jukebox.

Have never really listened to it as an album.

I think the first four songs on Sea Change are some of the best he's ever done, but after that...I don't know. Nothing really clicked with me. It's not horrible, just never connected. I think I'd appreciate Guero more if I heard it someplace other than my living room when I'm sitting there trying to do work. A juke would be a good start.

And yeah, considering how I find Midnite Vultures kind of dated, it's weird that I don't find Odelay the same, the Dust Brothers have got that period sound now. To me it sounds as good as it ever did.

Beck has always held my interest in that I'm curious to hear with what he comes up with next.

Seeing him on the Odelay tour was one of the best shows I've ever been too.

Sea Change, to me, is a mood record. Read: heartbreak record. Listening to it with those ears it's perfect.

Completely ballsy move to put that out after MV even if some of it hasn't held up.

I haven't listened to any of his records in a long time but I'm looking forward to hearing the new one.

And I like Guero. It's fun.

I don't really agree that it was the first one to dig "deeper" although most of his older lyrics were much more ambiguous. Sea Change definitely tries to grasp at bigger themes, and in doing so I think Beck moved away from his strengths. I think a lot of artists become less interesting and less rewarding when start trying to tackle more "universal" themes, and to me Sea Change is a good example of this. "The Golden Age" is a good song, but I'll take any of the slacker, fake blues off of One Foot in the Grave over anything on Sea Change.

Also, I just recently regained my appreciation for Odelay, probably for the first time since I wore it out in the summer of '96. It really did define the sound of a brief period there in alt/indie stuff, and I think that made it hard to listen to for a while.

backward sincerity - blatant weirdness = reality

Drinky - I should mention that I am a fan of those older records.
