Anybody else seen this? I caught it the other night on Sundance Channel, and it was GREAT. It would be of particular interest to all Southern Obnish, especially those in Louisiana (where the majority of this takes place).

This is required viewing for oldbullee, Stop Breathin', E. Fu, LooGAR, Derris, et. al.

I wrote a review of it earlier today on Hip Displeasure.

I've been meaning to see this for some time, but I killed my Netflix sub, and I haven't stumbled across it in my travels.

Yeah, when me and jagged went to go see Neko Case last year, his opening set really spun us around. We vascillated back and forth between hating, pitying and loving the guy. When it was all said and done, he was pretty much our hero.

i dont know if he still has the same guys he had back in '02, but his drummer back then was off the hook. the guy played without a hi hat & used his left foot to play bass lines on a footpedal he had set up on the floor next to him. and they werent just root/5th lines, either.
it was unbelievable.

edit: does he still do that 'the devil's in the woodpile' number?

I saw this movie. I thought it was a very interesting vantage point of the southern poor.

One of the main things I thought was, these are the people the Republicans keep tricking.

Yes and yes. His backing band SLAYED. In fact, if I call correctly, he does a bit of "Devil in the Woodpile" in the aforementioned Jim White film.

I saw this and thought it was alright. There were some genuinely bizarre moments like the dude playing that song in the barbershop.

Some great footage in it, but in a way I felt like this was just as much of a romanticized vision of the South as you'll get from Hollywood, only with a different bent. It plays up the poverty and the dichotomy of Southern communities rather than glossing over all of the ugly stuff. Worth seeing but not one of my favorite music-doc type things.

Kind of "meh" if you ask me. It shows poverty in the South, and the music is a soundtrack to it. All the movie does is perpetuate the negative stereotypes held by people looking in from the outside of Southern culture. If someone outside of the South wanted to learn more about traditional Southern life I'd rather tell them to listen to a Drive-By Truckers CD than watch this movie.

Now you've got me. I can actually probably attribute to it in/accuracy. I don't really know what it's about, but from this thread, prolly.

I'll see it and report back.

finally got to watch this yesterday. not being a southerner i cant speak for the authenticity of many of the scenes, although having spent some time in the south, i can say that i did find some representations to be a little broader [to be kind about it] than others.
my main bone to pick was that as an 'outsider', i wouldve liked to see more direction in tems of what this film was supposed to convey. as it was, between the editing and complextiy of the subjects it tried to tackle, i felt like i didnt really have any sense at all of what this was really supposed to be about.
from a purely aesthetic point of view, i thought it was really, really beautiful, tho & the cinematography was at times stunning.

*bump*

Watched this 'noon. Halfway through I felt a little odd about the film, thinking it was using the stereotypes against the people of the south, but then I thought back to what Jim Whit said near the end, and got the point. Beauty is all around us, and just because something isn't aesthetically pleasing doesn't mean there isn't an inherent beauty to it. I also thought that this film was an excellent source to show perhaps where some southern writers/artists get their inspiration. One half of my family is southern. Alabama mostly. I've visited and stayed down there bunches as a kid, and I remember it being worlds apart from what I was used to, but very cool because it had its own culture (had no idea what that was at the time, but I knew something was different that I enjoyed).

I recommend it, if not for the interesting outlook of A south among many souths, then tune in for the great music. Harry Crews is simply spellbinding. I need to pick up some of his books.
