Just revisited Korn's first album (1994). It is fucking brilliant.

There is no guitar tone to speak of, so everyone plays like a drummer. And the interplay between the five guys is unlike any band on earth--each filling in all the little holes... like a dj muggs production or something.

Unfortunately the lyrics are retarded and every single note they've every recorded since then has been ridiculous. Therefore no one who hasn't heard the album believes me in its awesomeness.

Even though I despise Korn because their lyrics are and have always been insufferable and I've wanted to boot Davis in the teeth for about a decade, you're right about the interplay and the uniqueness of the actual album sound.

I won't like them because they spell bad.

I've got one:
Goo Goo Dolls - Hold Me Up

It's the perfect hybrid of Minneapolis punk bands; Husker Du guitar tones, Soul Assylum tunefulness, and Replacements drunken attitude. Some Goo apologists will say that superstar carwash is a better record, but they're just plain wrong. That was where they started their descent into pure, unadulterated horseshit cheeze.

In fact, everything after this record, is cheezy MOR crap.
Everything they did before it, was sloppy, honing their craft.

It all culminated with this one, perfect pop-punk album.

The best Minneapolis punk album that didn't come from Minneapolis.

He plays with the strings really loose and slaps them against the pickups. Someone on the Primus board once said it sounds like "a fucking hummingbird tapping on linoleum."

Also, good call on the Goo Goos, Todd. Was that the one on Metal Blade?

It was on Metal Blade.
But I don't think it was the only one that was. I think that Jed and the s/t debut were, as well.

Yeah. I was cringing at the lyrics the whole time.

Scream at me again, if you like
Throw your hate at me with all your might
Hit me 'cause I'm strange, hit me!
You tell me I'm a pussy and you're harder then me
What's with you boy? Think hard.
A tatooed body to hide who you are
Scared to be honest, be yourself
A cowardly man!

and this gem:
Right now I got something to say to all the people that think
I'm strange and I should be out here locked up in a cage
You don't know what the hell is up now anyway
You got this pretty-boy feeling
like I'm enslaved to a world that never
appreciated shit
YOU CAN SUCK MY DICK AND FUCKING LIKE IT!!!

That albums sounds like a snake orgy - unless you find a tail (ie, the cymbal tapping that starts off "Blind") it's hard to tell where one instrument ends and another begins. And it all intertwines into this mass of hedonistic, evil-sounding, super-heavy shit.

But you're all right. The lyrics are balls.

He also totally scoops out his eq. All bass, and super highs, no mids, so it invades the frequency ranges occupied by guitars, cymbals, and kick drum, making for a hot sloppy ear piercing mess.
