Only $15 million in the opening weekend helps explain why internet buzz can mean virtually nothing.

this is way, way true

also, an R movie never does much above 25 million for a weekend, so I'm not sure how this is that much of a disappointment

Not really all that strange. He's done quite a bit of score work, actually. Here's what Wikipedia has to offer:

The studio was hoping for the low 20's.

I don't think it'll do the quick decay most R-rated horrorish movies do...

It'll be able to hit the Horror fans 'till "The Departed" comes out, actioners until "Crank" comes out, and the people who will go see "Beerfest" have probably already invested in a ticket...

I'm saying around $60 million domestic....

i'm sure it will do really well on DVD with the "i can't bring myself to pay $8 to see a so bad it's good movie" crowd.

I think I'm waiting for DVD on this one, although one scene sounds too good to be true, so who knows.

Also, is anyone else suprised that the budget was $35,000,000 (estimated)?

I thought that the studio didn't advertise much, thinking the buzz would be enough.

Mistake, maybe?

I thought you were going to say the snakes.

On an airplane? Like, how would that even work?

Unfortunately for the hipster intelligentsia, then, this movie is actually so good, it's good.

Suckers. And that means you, too, nickisnotdead.

Am I the only one who read a lot of the internet buzz as having a very mocking tone to it? And that Hollywood trades & the regular media (and some people caught up in the buzz) total misread it?

I thought the tone very early on was very mocking & at some point it turned to 50/50 mocking/actually excited buzz. But a lot of people missed the mocking part. A lot of people who's job it is to be in the know. And then there was a third crowd to already established mocking people & actually excited people, the ones who didn't get it at all. All they read was the actually excited people & they didn't understand the hype. And they mistook the mockers for being in that camp too & couldn't play along.

This movie if for nothing else (besides all the great internet humour) was a real interesting exercise to see where people you know landed among these 3 groups. Well at least the internet savvy ones. Unfair to give the SOAP test to the others.

There is a fourth group, in which a majority of people I know fall: never heard of SOAP, and wouldn't care if they did.
