Of course the Boo Radleys go first. :D

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... 13-8259038

Yeah no much but this is what I have found out. 40 tracks all selected by Martin Carr himself. Two full disc and won't be enough!

Swervedriver

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... 13-8259038

Juggernaut Rides also due Feb 25 as an Import and a two disc anthology as well. Unlike the Boo Radleys who have 6 albums, a rare comp (15 Songs), and 27 singles, Swervedriver has only 3 albums and a few singles. So with this you will have most of their output.

Teenage Fanclub

What is the title of the new album?

We had a band meeting a couple of days ago and it was definitely called ‘Man Made' then but that may have changed since then. So I'm going to hold off on that until I am 100 percent sure.

What is the status of the album?

The record is completed. We want to get it out in January. We are trying to decide if we should go independent or release it through Dominio. Laurence really likes it.

We really want to do our new record independently. Set up a label and put it out. Signing to a record label is only good for distribution. Once you have the distribution set up, you can let the music speak for itself. I mean, if we didn't do it that way, the only other way we would do it is let Alan, Geoff Travis or Laurence release it - people who have respect for the artists and love music. We are thinking about either situation but I love the idea of setting up a Teenage Fanclub cottage industry. It seems like a lot of hard work but a lot of fun and at the same time - not working on schedules and nobody demanding a new record nor trying to network through a massive infrastructure to get something simple done.

But it's great that we've got a finished album - if we decide to take it to Domino or elsewhere - we can present the finished album instead of going ‘Hey the album is going to be really great - trust us'. They can hear it and decide for themselves. And its nice full-circle because we did a similar thing with our first album ‘A Catholic Education'.

Meister

Mark & Loz from Ride, Sice from The Boo Radleys and Idha all make appearances on the forthcoming album from Meister, the solo project of Ryo Matsui from Japanese pop/rock band The Brilliant Green.

Ryo Matsui's band The Brilliant Green have sold over 2.5 Million records worldwide and were voted into the top ten contemporary acts outside the U.S. by Time magazine. He was keen to record a solo project which enabled him to broaden his musical horizons and enlisted a host of prestigious musicians that have inspired him over the years. Everyone that Ryo approached were only too happy to contribute, even Peter Saville (Joy Division/ New Order/ Suede/ Pulp/ Alexander McQueen) who designed the artwork for the album!

Amongst those featured on the album are Mark Gardener and Loz Colbert (Ryo is a huge fan of Ride), Sice (Boo Radleys/ Eggman), Manda Rin (Bis) Howard Jones (one of Ryo’s favourite musicians from his first encounter with British music in the 80’s) and a selection of his favourite Scandinavian vocalists – Maria Solheim, Eskobar and Idha.

Full album tracklisting:
‘Be Love’ (w/ Sice)
‘Dignity’ (w/ Manda Rin)
‘I Call You Love’ (w/ Gary Stringer)
‘I Want You To Show Me’ (w/ Howard Jones)
‘It’s My Life’ (w/ Manda Rin)
‘My World Down’ (w/ Mark Gardener)
‘Freedom’
‘Jealousy’ (w/ Sice)
‘Whidbey’ (w/ Idha)
‘Maestro’
‘Red Leaves’ (w/ Eskobar)
‘Kind Of Cold’ (w/ Maria Solheim)
‘Morning Sun’ (w/ Idha)

Of course, if you missed it the first time, all your Super Furry Animals news right here:

http://obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=2332&highlight=sfa

The only change is now Under the Influence has been picked up in America and will be released March 8th.

OK here is something new for SFA:

"We're in a luxurious position as a band (Super Furry Animals) where we always have far too many songs anyway. Since we did 'Mwng' (SFA's 2000 Welsh language album) I've been collecting ideas for lyrics, and it took this long to get together." (Gruff Rhys)

The star added: "I'm considering splitting up after this record. I'm not sure exactly where, horizontally, or vertically."

SFA are also hard at work on their seventh studio album - the follow up to 2003's 'Phantom Power' - to be released on Epic during spring 2005. Rhys told NME recently that the album "has an orchestral feel to it". The band are reported to be finishing the mixing of the album in Brazil shortly.

Oh yeah I forgot:

SFA frontman GRUFF RHYS is to guest star on the new album by BOOM BIP.

The star, who releases his own debut solo album 'Yr Atal Genhedlaeth' sings on the track 'Do's And Dont's', which appears on the album 'Blue Eyed In The Red Room', out February 21.

Boom Bip, real name Bryan Hollon, had previously remixed the SFA track 'Father, Father', which appeared on the band's remix album 'Phantom Phorce' earlier this year.

I did miss the swervedriver news, the bump is much appreciated. Didn't mind the SFA update at all either.

'05 is starting to look mighty fine

Anyone? WHat's the word on the Swervedriver anthology? I've been trying to procure Ejector Seat Reservation for quite some time an see that it's available on amazon uk...nevermind. I may just have to pay 12.99 sterling for that album.

I used to be the biggest SFA fan but my love has dwindled over the last two albums despite an overall warm reception to them. I guess i miss the magic of the first few albums.

I found SFA in the strangest way. I was getting heavily into British music again and would go through my AMG music guide book and highlight anything that sounded interesting from England. I noticed SFA, highlighted the only album on the list...the debut and purchased it from amazon uk. From the day i received it until a year or two ago i tried to purchase everything of theirs. They dominate my collection with Suede, but like Suede i haven't been as happy with their output lately.

i am excited about the new Butler/Anderson project however.

I liked 'Rings Around the World' but I generally agree with you about SFA's recent material. I mean it's not bad at all but it doesn't really compare to the early albums. I think my favourite is probably 'Fuzzy Logic' if only for the 'Home Town Unicorn' guitar solo.

I'll keep an eye out for Butler/Anderson and see what the reaction is, but I'm not that hopeful. I have everything Suede did up to the 'Head Music' album but I regard them at this stage as washed up talents.

Likewise Teenage Fanclub. A great band in their prime but 'Howdy' didn't impress me at all.

Kon - What's your take on the McAltamont(sp?) Butler stuff. I've never heard any of it except for an old Jools Holland episode. It sounded pretty good. I haven't heard much about their more recent album either.

How's Motherwell done the last few weeks? I could easily check but i'm being lazy.

Well I remember it was a reasonable hit with the critics at the time, but David McAlmont had one of those voices you either loved or hated. I'm afraid I was of the later school.

As for the Mighty 'Well they've wilted slightly in recent weeks. Two defeats (although one was away to Rangers so that was kinda expected) and a 0-0 draw last week against Aberdeen. As with most 0-0 draws I find it was actually a cracking game. We're all looking forward to our League Cup semi final against Hearts (who we've beaten twice from two) in a couple of weeks. Oh so close and yet so afar from silverwear!

About Super Furry Animals: Everyone has their own opinion and that’s what is so great about music. What impresses me most about this band is that they are recording more music than anyone else in rock today. While other bands have three or four albums over the last ten years, they have six original albums, and 57 B-sides or songs on comps (that I know of). RATW was the first musical DVD/CD combo release ever. The music for the DVD was mixed in 5.1 surround sound as a follow on to the band's use of the technology in their live gigs. The band produced an EP's worth of instrumental music for the DVD menus that lead into the various parts of the disc, this extra music was supposedly based upon their unpublished electronica album which was sadly lost in a computer crash some months before. The first time I heard RATW was in surround sound and it blew me away.

They might be getting a bit restless themselves because they are taking a different approach for the new album:

Quote:
NEVER a band to rest on their laurels, the Super Furry Animals are currently at the peak of their creative energies.

So how have the close-knit five-piece managed to remain so prolific and yet consistent over the last 10 years?

"We've kept it interesting for ourselves by staying away from the comfort zone," says the band's guitarist Huw 'Bunf' Bunford.

"Perhaps not being massively successful and not selling shed- loads of of albums has helped a bit too. We've just been able to get on with things."

In the meantime, the band are focusing their energies on their seventh studio album - the follow-up to Phantom Power - to be released during spring 2005.

Normally lead singer Gruff Rhys does most of the writing but those duties have been shared out among the rest of the band this time around.
"There's 14 songs on there but it's difficult to give a definitive description," says Bunf.

"We were all chipping in with our own material. Cian has written three of the songs, Daf has written two, I've got a couple of them and Gruff has the rest. It's really quite a mixed bag but it still has this continuity."

Bunf also hinted this latest album is the most orchestral the Furries have ever been and described the feel as "upbeat".

"I think it is pretty radical, especially in terms of lyrics," he added. "It's a very honest, direct and very loving album."

I agree Howdy! was no good, but I don't think they will repeat that.

The only thing I can find on Swervedriver:

Swervedriver fan site Wrote:

Swervedriver retrospective on Sanctuary:
"Yes, it appears that there will be a Swervedriver
retrospective CD issued sometime in the new year.
Not a lot to report right now other than the fact that
Jimmy has been meeting up with Alan Moulder in
London and going through some of the master reels.

At the moment it looks like Sanctuary are quite into
the idea of it containing unreleased/ rarities as well
as being a kind of Best Of and are looking at issuing
a double CD set so it could be pretty cool."

I have a burn of RATW somewhere, but was always much more impressed by the song "The Man Don't Give a Fuck" which was probably my favorite single of 2002 (at least that's when I heard it/listened to it the most)

What's a good place to start with The Boo Radleys?

I think it's pretty much agreed 'Giant Steps' is the best The Boo Radleys album. It's certainly my favourite one.

This is fucking incredible! If Boo Radleys looks anything like this then I will be in heaven (40 Tracks picked by Martin but no unreleased stuff). Priced at around $25 and has many tracks that I don’t own, will have to get. For those of you who don’t know Swervedriver, this is a great place to start. I’m about to fall in love all over again.

Quote From an Adam interview

"There was a song called 'Just Sometimes' that I wanted to re-name 'Song of Laughter & Forgetting' which has all the instruments and melodies going round in cycles, a song called 'Neon Lights Glow' which is ten minutes long, has a string section on it and is a cross between 'Neon Lights' by Kraftwerk, 'Rumble' by Duane Eddy and 'Signed DC' by Love, and 'Ennio II' which has an Ennio Morricone feel but is really just a strange little instrumental. None of these tracks are available as far as I know, but what do I know?"

"Neon Lights IS the most expensive single recording we did (around £18000 (approx $32000)) - it has an amazing string arrangement (put together by adam & the string quartet), and is around the length of Duress"

Oh how I work for thee Obner.

I worked too hard filling in where these songs came from so, bump.

Also for the weekday, only use the internet at work crew.

Or you can see how it's going on ILX.

Fuck yeah! Teenage Fanclub!

I just want them to tour this motherfucker. Only time I've seen them live is when they opened for Radiohead back in '97. Wanna see a 2 hour show covering their entire catalog. Think it'll happen?

Guy Chadwick talks about The House of Love reunion

Guy and TerryGuy Chadwick has been talking for the first time about the newly reformed House of Love.

In an interview with the Belfast Telegraph he tells about how the band got back together why they decided to do it after all the years.

In the interview he states:

"It does feel as though there is some unresolved business," says Chadwick. "The reason we didn't capitalise on it and make the most of what we had at that time is that we kept falling out with each other."

"We were having such difficulties in the band that it just made it impossible to go forward. It was a nightmare. It was a real mess and we really did make a pig's ear of it."

The reunion was painless and surprising easy. Early last summer, Mick Griffith, the band's old booking agent, floated the idea of a new House Of Love album.

Chadwick, who had stepped away from music for several years, didn't dismiss it out of hand. Griffith contacted the original members and with the exception of bassist Chris Groothuizen, they all agreed.

"Terry was up for it, which was the most important thing for me," says Chadwick. "I had actually talked to him over the years two or three times about making a record together. We both felt that we'd like to try and do it, but it just didn't work out.

"This time it was really the right time for both of us to get on with things. We needed this much time to pass for both of us to go forward."

The record, to be called Days Run Away, is reflective and without the rage of their great breakthrough album. But it's still unmistakably The House Of Love.

"I'm a different person," says Chadwick of the newer, quieter direction. "I'm a father, I've got a teenage daughter, I'm reasonably content. All those years ago there was anger, but this one is a bit more subtle.

"We put ourselves under pressure to make a really good record because we knew there wasn't any point in making something unless it was 100% us. It's as good as anything we've done.

"It's hard when you come back after so long to compare what you're doing now with what you were doing then - there's obviously a difference in the musical styles a bit, but in terms of what we feel about it, it's really, really good."

Teenage Fanclub has been delayed, now it looks like March.

----------
Super Furry Animals have finished mixing their next album in Brazil.

The Welsh quintet recently spent 20 days in Rio de Janeiro, locked in the studio with Brazilian producer Mario Caldato where they were completing the follow-up to 2003’s ‘Phantom Power’.

Caldato, who also worked on ‘Phantom Power’, helped the band recording the new LP in Cataluna, Spain, but asked the band to fly to Rio for the final mixing.

"We loved the idea of returning to Rio," singer Gruff Rhys told NME.COM. The band last visited the country in 2003 when they played in Rio with The Rapture and The White Stripes.

"Our schedule at that time was too tight, we didn't have time to see the city", Rhys explained, though this time, guided by Caldato, the band were able to see some local gigs and also a football game at Maracana stadium.

Super Furry Animals are yet to name the new album, which is due for release in May. According to Rhys, the record has an "orchestral" flavour, and will feature lead vocals from guitarist Huw 'Bunf' Bunford and drummer Daffyd Ieuan.

Rhys is to go on a short tour of his native Wales - and one show in Ireland - to promote debut solo album 'Yr Atal Genhedlaeth', out next week (January 24) but March in the US.

As previously revealed on NME.COM, the band's label Placid Casual will release the record on January 24. Clocking in at 29 minutes and containing 11 songs, 'Yr Atal Genhedlaeth' (which translates roughly as 'The Stuttering Generation') was recorded with Gorwel Owen at Stiwdio Ofn at various points between summer 2003 and spring 2004.

---

For fun, what Martin Carr thinks of Gruff Rhys solo album posted yesterday:

"i think its great. it reminds me of the fingertipsaint stuff. not in a way that would be obvious to anyone else but it sounds like a record made by gorwell owen in his house. its very warm and upbeat, inventive and spangly."

mx

-----------

I bumped this thread because I found the House of Love info via Creation Records and just found out about Teenage Fanclub today as well.

Glad they included a few gems, but I hope it also inspires a reissue of Raise with the complete B-sides from their first three long-out-of-print EPs. The songs missing from the compilation include:

Volcano Trash
She's Beside Herself
Afterglow
Zedhead
Flawed
Out
Laze It Up

When the Son Of Mustang Ford EP came out in 1990, their mix of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Spacemen 3 was just what I was craving at the time. It is odd they never got huge. Ejector Seat Reservation was never even issued in the states. Hope the compilation revives interest.
