Maynard?
I've always wondered if the Tool frontman is an authentically metal performer. The band's discography, and even same of the Perfect Circle side project, seems to point that way; plus, playing in a band with a guy that played bass in Tom Morello's pre-Rage Lock-up -- and note, Tom Morello is not indie, he's not even punk -- doesn't lend itself to being able to affect some of the histrionics of metal showman while ritualistically shitting on the rest. But, then I saw this:
Biting rendition of classic Metallica ("Master of Puppets").
Matching that to earlier Maynard moves -- attending, then performing in, the Axl Rose rock-opera at some divey L.A. club; cozying up to ur-hipster Aaron North of Buddyhead/ex-Icarus Line/touring Nine Inch Nails guitarist -- I can now only think one thing: Maynard is Weird Al, with a shallower tan and no sense of humour.
Is this at all a worthwhile opinion?
