bought this on the street in bklyn a few weeks ago and finally got around to reading it. quite interesting stuff about lenono and what it was like inside the Dakota over the last few years. He was pretty whacked, but at least he knew well enough to smoke Gitanes.

Anybody have any stories about where they were when they heard Lennon was shot? I'm trying to imagine what it was like to have been alive at the same time as the man and I'm having a hard time, although I can't believe it would be terribly different.

Don't remember where I was when Lennon died but I was at Bible Camp when Elvis died.

The camp dean made the announcement over the louderspeakers and gave this blubbering testimonial about what a Great American the King was. Later when I found out more details, I remember thinking how weird it was for a drug addict who died on the flush to be touted in nearly Apostolic terms.

I was at home and heard the news on TV regarding Lennon. The TV and radio was all Lennon/Beatles the next week. I recorded a bunch of it off the radio and took it to school, and the teacher let my class listen to it for a while.

Regarding Elvis' death, I was at a friend's house who lived near my grandma, playing in the back yard. His parents told us Elvis had died. I wasn't a big Elvis fan (and was a HUGE Beatles fan during my childhood) so this one didn't affect me nearly as much as Lennon getting shot.

I was eating a guacamole omelette at the Hamburger Hamlet on the Sunset Strip... I saw it announced on a TV that was on in the bar. I was with a fading academy-award winning actress and her husband, an overweight sculptor who was my lover. They laughed. I wanted to kill them. I felt, specifically, out of breath. The dream was over.

I don't remember where I was when Elvis died. He died from 1971-1975. I was a lot of places.

Lennon's murder was probably one of the earliest news events I can definately remember 'happening' at the time. I would have been 6 years old in 1980.

I doubt I'd even heard of the Beatles or knew anything about John Lennon but even as a young child I was able to recognise the scale of what had happened and what was being felt.

I remember Lennon's death vividly, but don't feel like sharing. Not here, anyway.

Oh and...

I was eight and was at a birthday party at United Skates of America. David, the birthday kid, was ten and was a big Beatles fan. His uncle had given him a bunch of records and we listened all the time...

Anyway, I can vividly remember David's mom going around to all the kids telling them not to mention Lennon - she was trying to keep it a secret so David's big birthday party wasn't ruined. She had kept him away from TV and radio all day.

I have no memories of Elvis's death.
