Universal Music CEO Doug Morris has made statements leading to the notion that Universal is gearing up to sue YouTube and the NewsCorp-owned myspace for copyright infringement.

In a couple statement to investors, Morris explained:

"We believe these new businesses are copyright infringers and owe us tens of millions of dollars, How we deal with these companies will be revealed shortly"

While the company apparently began talks with the video sharing service, those talks have reportedly broken down leading to the threat.

In less than three years, MySpace has emerged as a choice destination for young people and a hub for bands to promote music. Record labels big and small have created Web pages on the social networking hub for their bands, typically allowing visitors to listen to the artists' music for free.

Last year, the company began charging Web portals such as Yahoo Inc. and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL for playing its artists' music videos online or over video-on-demand services.

What makes it so awesome, at least a lot of it anyway, is that you can view copyrighted material for free, unfortunately.

<--- saw this coming.

Yeah, this one ranked pretty high om the inevitability scale.

Pretty interesting article I was reading about how YouTube and its ilk has sort of reinvigorated the music video medium. I guess Beck (por ejemplo) is making a (low budget) clip for evey song on his new album just for distribution on the YouTube's of the world.

Yep, the networking angle of it, much like Napster circa 1999, is a powerful force. But people can't stand to let a nickel go today, no matter what it might turn into tomorrow.

I dont recall people ever being too excited about letting money get away.

<--the kind of person who picks up pennies off the ground and is silently happy that no one else did first.

Which, by the way, is why News Corp. (the Fox blokes) bought myspace.
