Another influential band with only 4 proper albums to choose from.
Now... choose, please.

I have a feeling I know the way this is going to swing.

Imagine innocently going out on Halloween, 1989 to see fIREHOSE at a local club.
There's some local band that you're heard about opening up, ut you've never had any desire to see them.
"Oh well," you think, "Guess I'll get to see these guys. They're supposed to be pretty good."

The local yokels step on stage looking scruffy and unimpressive, plug in their guitars, and this is what you hear:

Your jaw hits the floor.
At least, mine did.

3 months later No Depression came out.

That, in part, is why I am choosing it. Changed my perspective of music.

I picked March 16-20, 1992 just ebcause that's what they sound like to me. I remember them playing afternoon acoustic shows at little spots around Belleville more than anything else about 'em.

I picked Anodyne. This was the first album of their that I bought, and it exposed me to a great band, that led to another 2 brilliant bands (ok, one more than the other).

I like that March 16-20 album a lot, but UT can do no wrong in my book.

One night I listened to March, Anodyne and Still Feel Gone all in a row. That was a weird, emotional night.

Still Feel Gone was the first one I heard, so I still have a deep affinity for that album.

Though No Depression was probably better.

I'd probably agree with you guys here too.

Anodyne does contain probably one of the best songs UT ever did though (even if they didnt write it), "Give Back The Key To My Heart".

IMHO

Good call. Props to Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet

oh hell yeah.

Hey I've got that Doug Sahm 1968-75 comp--is there a proper album you'd recommend for further listening?

His last solo record The Return of Wayne Douglas is surprisingly good. If it's the rock you need the 'jail' classic Groovers Paradise from 1974 where he's backed by CCR's rhythm section is a good one as well. He certainly led an interesting life...dude played on stage at age 11 with Hank Williams just weeks before he died. F**k. Child prodigy indeed.
