Sony Japan just spilled the deets on their new Walkman S series of digital audio players. Finally, Sony claims that the NW-S700 series delivers the highest sound quality in Walkman history due to the integrated noise cancelation and bundled 13.5mmEX earbuds with integrated in-line Mic. Nice, if indeed their claims of 25% less ambient noise are true. Also announced are the NW-S600 players offered in 2/1GB flavas but without the FM tuner and built-in noise cancelation. The NW-S700 players will hit October 21st in Japan in your choice of black, violet, gold, and pink while the NW-S600 DAPs are set to roll on November 18th in black, blue and pink. And of course, there's the limited edition NW-S706F/T in brown which, as you know, is the new white of consumer electronics. Expect to fork over up to ¥29,000 (about $242) for the 4GB NW-S706F or as little as ¥15,000 (about $125) for the 1GB NS-S603 model.

I've heard the sony software/ firmware has not been good and is difficult to use.

yeah, theres a reason why every sony flash based music player has completely failed in the market. the software sucks.

cheaper than most compact discs

it skips like crazy
so i just listen to fatboy slim

This is correct. We all benefit by someone getting their act together and putting out something truly comparable in every way (not just memory, interface, etc... the whole ownership package).

Does this thing play actualy cd's? If not, I'll keep my original $35 dollar Sony Discman. It works perfectly for mp3's I burn to cd-r's.


Did anyone see those Sony "bean" mp3 players?

i'm still using and loving my 40GB, photo capable Sony VAIO Pocket that i got over a year ago. not a single problem. sw is easy to use.
i think it was only released in the UK and Japan, and they are no longer making it...so i won't get any sw or fw updates....but at a little over $200...i'm not complaining.
