At 10.00am Friday October 13th, US Eastern time, President George Bush signed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, bringing that Act into force.

As a result, and in accordance with the advice of its lawyers, Betcorp Limited has suspended all US-facing operations, pending further analysis of the Act’s final text and receipt of further legal advice.

This means that, until further notice, it will not be possible for US residents to place wagers or make deposits on, or make withdrawals from, any website owned or operated by any company in the Betcorp group. This account freeze will remain in place until such time as Betcorp has fully assessed its legal position.

Betcorp’s websites will continue to accept deposits and wagers from, and process withdrawals for, all customers other than US residents in the ordinary course of business. Betcorp currently has customers in some 87 countries other than the US.

The Board and Executive Management of Betcorp are committed to ensuring that all US customers will have access to their accounts restored as soon as possible.

Betcorp’s help lines and online inquiry services for all Group websites will continue to operate, with additional staff being deployed to handle US customer inquiries. Betcorp will keep all customers informed of developments.

Bastards. I need to find a real bookie.

I saw that earlier. What the shit is that about? are they funding terrorism? Is this a shitty play to try to get the religious right back on his side?

I need to read more about it, but it was tacked on to the Port Safety bill.

I dunno, I mean it is illegal to wager on sports in 49 states, any winnings you have online arent taxed yadda yadda yadda.

But for fucks sake, if Chief Redcloud can deal blackjack and I can go blow my paycheck on Lotto tickets, whats the harm in a couple bucks on a football game.

This shit is decidedly un-American.

politics is so fucking retarded.

Of course it's un-American. But I live in a commonwealth where I can't buy booze on sunday, so I'm used to the jesus freaks dominating my lifestyle.

Bill Frist cut a deal with some anti-gambling douche from Iowa*. If Frist could get internet gambling banned, the Iowa douche would back Frist for Iowa in his 2008 run. That's why Frist tacked it in the Port Security bill, where it was hidden and politically unwise to vote against.

At the same time, Government doesn't like online gambling because it provides beaucoup competition for lotteries, slots, horse racing and casinos, all of which contribute to government coffers. Online gambling didn't benefit individual states or municipalities, because they were offshore.

*With only the least amount of research possible, it looks like the douche is Jim Leach (R-IA).

All online gambling, as far as I can tell. The games themselves aren't banned, but credit card companies and banks aren't allowed to get involved in the money exchange. I'm not a gambler, so I don't know if any ultra-sketchy third party vendors have popped up yet.

yeah i had to quit, but the only thing that i was any good at betting on was the nba playoffs anyway. still, i've been following this issue and i was aware of the doucheitude of the venerable senator from iowa and the incredible, incomprehensible douchitude of that asshat from tennessee. i know a guy whose entire source of income is/was online gambling, so i guess that i should call him to see if he's killed himself.

I dunno pal. Hows about PM'ing me what site you use and I'll make that descision for you.

As for me, my money is frozen until the gambling site can figure out whats what. The site in charge of the financial transfer (basically a British version of paypal) has frozen all transfers with American customers.

Its not a ton of money or anything but I was up for the year and of course its all about principles...

I wonder if some other gambling outfit has an over/under on the outcome of this?
