i'm sure there was a rave or two in random topic that i haven't read but it surprises me that no one told me about these guys. what a fun album. does anyone else really dig this?

i'm glad i got it in time to want to go to the show in feb. i'd be pissed if i bought this in march and missed the show.

c.

I heard this record once, and it was good ("Robot" is a fave). I know KPH is a fan.

Yay! Another one finds The Futureheads! Indeed a fun band, equally as fun live. The boys are in town filming a video and had an in-store at Amoeba last night. Unfortunately, due to work, I was unable to go. But saw them a couple of months ago and had a great time.

Yeah, this one sounds like what XTC should have done right after Black Sea. A perfect blend of the best parts of XTC and Gang Of Four. It's in my alarm clock and I wake to it every day.

Some songs sounded like really spot-on Wire impressions to me in addition to Gang of Four and XTC.

It's a fun record, but I, uh, ripped it and sold it (bought it for $5 used, sold for the same).

I haven't listened to it in a long time, but it wasn't one of my favorites from last year.

Love it! Definitely in my top 10 (sometimes even top 5) and mention it whenever I can. Not quite up to the level of some of the classics they were obviously influenced by, but perfectly respectable for a 2004 rock album and Gill's production help gives them some much needed cred in the overpopulated post rock dance new wave punk pop field. Here's one of a few comments....

I, too, was planning on seeing them at Amoeba last night, but the rain conspired to keep me away...it's a pretty good, sometimes funny, buzzcocks-meets-rockapella album...

i'd say a third of it could put the record in my top 10, but the other 2/3 of the record seem a bit redundant and...even a little boring.

i think i agree with that. yup.

(but i'm planning to go the show)

i also like:

1. that, at any given moment there are at least two guys singing

2. that they play guitar like they want to break their strings on every song

Yeah, I kind of thought that at first too, but it did get a lot better for me after a few listens. Still, they do have a core sound that they don't deviate much from and that could get to be a problem if they try to put out another record that sounds the same. But they've already got some pretty good songs down on this one. Still not nearly as good overall as something like Black Sea by XTC, but it is just their debut. The music editor at metacritic called it album of the year - now that's going a bit too far for me.

In some songs, there are actually THREE guys singing.

still haven't really gotten this one yet. perhaps i'll give another listen. "First Day" was a fantastic song but everything else pretty much sounds like it to my ears.
