while rummaging through the different cabinets and compartments that I store the discs in I realize I have a lot of albums I haven't even heard yet. This both elates and depresses me at the same time.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I blame lala, thrift shops, and my collecting obsession for this. But not myself.

I hardly listen to stuff that I buy for a buck because I had heard of the artist and such.

Edit: and then I'm like, "what a waste of a buck."

i am severely backlogged on stuff that needs a listen or two, yet i still consume at a faster rate then i could ever hope to catch up with.

all of my new purchases sit in a pile on my desk until i've had at least one listen in the car.

so nothing gets filed before at least one quality listen.

i had a backlog while straightening out some home stereo issues, but this is usually how i approach filing too. right now, i just have two albums (modey lemon - "thunder + lightning", genesis - "the lamb lies down on broadway") that need a good listen before going on the shelves.

I never put anything away (or sell it) before I've listened to it at least a half-dozen times.

Because I buy so much, I spend most of my time just listening to my most recent purchases and rarely find time to work in anything else. I've downloaded shitloads of stuff that I've never listened to.

I rip every purchase before filing away the CD. That way it's on my iPod, and ready to go. For some reason, downloads take a lot longer.

Yeah, unfortunately I have vinyl that sorely gets pushed to the back. My problem has risen dramatically since I bought an ipod. The cool thing though is kind of forgetting you got something and then rediscovering it, and finding that it is a great album...f'instance the new Chris Thile album which I am really, really digging.

For the past three years I have purchased roughly 300 CD's each year. I listen only to the current year albums for the most part until Nov-Feb rolls around and that is when I catch up on the older stuff. Everything will get a minimum of five spins regardless. Any album of merit will garner a minimum of 30 spins. I just looked at itunes and here are some of my fave/most listened to albums of this year:

Strokes - 62 spins
Silversun Pickups - 55
Cat Power - 53
Asobi Seksu - 50
Built to Spill - 40
Format - 39
Raconteurs - 38
Belle & Sebastian - 37
Camera Obscura - 35
Radio Dept. - 35

I'm embarrassed to list the number of cds which are given to me that I never listen to. I'd say I have at least 30 discs which have never been played. Downloads on my computer... I have tons of stuff that I never listen to. Yet I've listened to the same Phoenix song 18 times in the last week.

I listen to everything I get, with a few exceptions. I have a few records from thrift stores that I have bought as a joke for .25, that I have never gotten around to listening to. I never really kept any of the albums I had no interest in listening to at the time when I was working college radio.

You are not alone. Slowly but surely I'm learning to let go, 'xcept for the "must haves." Ironically those thrift stores, small retailers and etc turn out to be my rescuers with their donate now or buy back programs. Crazy enough I have given up much more cds than Lps.

Honestly, I haven't even listened to the rest of the album. I despise everything before "Consolation Prizes", though.

I know I say this every weekend, but I REALLY need to organize my collection. My Tripl3fastaction disc is missing and I'm going to scream if I don't find it soon.

What Phoenix song would that be? Long Distance Call? I've worn that one out.

A fine tune, indeed.

I haven't heard the second one, but I do like it better than United if only because of the increased guitar presence. I find myself continually going back to this thing after all these months. It is ranked #15 of the year for me at this point.

i think it's a bore compared to what i love by them, like "if i ever feel better" and "victim of the crime," among others. i also think "long distance call" is completely forgettable. (in fact, i'm not sure i could even hum it anymore.)

I've never heard those songs.

I've changed my opinion. They suck now. Thanks for the much needed bucket of cold water dumped on me from behind.
