I know we have a bunch of working stiffs who post here, so I was curious what type of space we have to spend the majority of our days in. I'm talking about the actual area that you call your office. I'm not talking about the people you have to work with or the space you share. That's a different subject all together.

Mine: 7.9

A little on the small side but it's pretty secluded and quiet. I've got a stereo with an ipod and a window that looks out onto a little atrium area. Added benefit of the room having it's own thermostat that only I control. In about two months, the building I'm in will undergo a massive rennovation with most of the work occuring right outside my window so that could push it down into the mid sixes.

Cube is large, but on a major intersection, with a lot of traffic walking by.
Actually, the largeness of the cube kinda sucks in that I have to take off my headphones when I need something behind me.

I don't get it. That's pretty much what defines the "office" I work in.

We have the whole 11th floor of our building.

I have a decent size cube with window in the back corner. Of course the window faces another building, but who cares.

I got a cd player and speakers, and can play it just loud enough where it doesnt disturb anyone around me.

It is not the worst situation to be in.

The Goods: Rather secluded, large office with nice big windows on one wall that overlook the parking lot, warehouses across the street and a large grass field. Big L-shaped wood desk with leather office chair. Dart board on the wall for the slow times when a couple of co-workers and myself challenge each other to cricket. Smaller drafting table in one corner for making mock-ups.

The Bad: Not allowed to keep my door closed, so people always know I'm here. Any sound reverberates down the long hallway right outside my door, so no use of speakers...headphones only (which is good and bad), previously mentioned dartboard has left hundreds of tiny little holes in the wall and chips in previously mentioned nice wood desk that I am hoping my boss never actually notices until I am long gone.

the good: monkey paw on a marble stand

the bad: not enough lotion

What's this not being able to close the door crap? That's the point of the door.

i have a tiny cube (about 6x8), but i'm moving to a larger one next week. right now there is an L-shaped desk with a computer, phone, about a thousand sheets of paper, my chair, and a guest chair. i also sit near a call center, so it's loud. and because i sit next to those people, i can only listen on headphones. unfortunately, the headphone input and my desk do not work well together. (the cord stretches across my body if i'm not facing the inside wall.)

i'm three desks away from the window. the view is divine. i work across the street from millennium park in chicago, so i have a view of the park, lake michigan, and soldier field.

score: 5.5 (this may bump up to as much as 8 by next week)

Yeah, it's a case of the THEM that run the place. If the rules allowed us to rate the people we work with, my rating would plummet.

Unless I ever get some corner office in some fancy tower I won't get much better than I have right now. Speaking only of the physical aspects of my office.

GOOD: I'm on the first floor in a room about 12 x 30. Big enough to have 2 doors to the hall. One entire side is all glass with blinds and a window I can open when it's nice. I have one other person in this room with me. 2 desks and some filing cabinets. We openly have camping chairs set up in the room for when we want to have a relaxed meeting.

I can put whatever the hell I want on the walls and I can play music all day

BAD: I don't have printer in the room. I have to go out into the hall to get shit.

I'm overlooking train tracks on the western edge of St-Henri, a trashy, charming, historic neighbourhood in the southwest of Montreal.

This is miles better than the toxic industrial fortress that we called office for several months.

OK, well I'm in a shared cube. And since I'm not even a permanent/full-time employee, I probably shouldn't even be posting here.

But since I have a regular spot here for the 9 out of 12 months I've averaged here for the past 3 years, I guess I'll rate mine.

5.0

Well, it's a step up from where I used to sit, but as I mentioned before, I share a cube with other freelancers. I get more work than most of them, though, so a lot of times the other spot is empty and I've got it to myself. I've finally got a really good, fast computer that I've had almost no problems with (it's among the best ones here) and two fairly decent flatscreens. I have my headphones on listening to music all day long, and generally no one cares.

Unfortunately, my back is turned to the opening in the cube so anyone walking by can see what I'm doing. Just means I have to do my job, and if I'm on the internet, I need a good excuse like rendering (what I'm doing right now) or something where I'm just having to wait on the computer to do something.

My chair kinda sucks.

The design/art dept. is the entire top floor of our building. The accounting/sales drones never come up here, modern furniture, music is cranked all day, coffee and food on tap, open environment to keep inspiration and conversation flowing, design book library, our own kitchen, plants, and friday volleyball matches.

NO CUBICLES.

I feel bad rating my cube a 5.0 because the place where I work is easily a 9.0.

have a great office and the coworkers whom I have befriended are right across the hall. I can close my door whenever I want and play music and do all that great crap. Could always be bigger, but I'm not complaining. I've had cubicle jobs before and this blows everything out of the water.

After reading about everyone's awesome offices, I hereby reduce my score to a 3.shit.

I'll rate my office space a 7.3 and the overall appearance a 4.4.
It's a shitty office that needs paint and new ceiling panels, but I got plenty of space, a huge desk and a pretty decent office chair. My computer really sucks too.

2.7 on th billyg scale.

i work on the second floor of a two-story building that serves as a truck depot for my company. second floor is broken out into a few cubes. the place hasn't been updated at all since...probably 1974. it's usually too hot in here, the server goes down often and the few lifers that work here are extrememly loud, fat and obnoxious.

the GOOD (and the only thing saving this from being a 0.3), only 8 people work here, including the 4 in my group. i can wear whatever i want. we can work from home whenever we want. and when i do come in, the normal schedule is: arrive around 9. go out for coffee around 10 for an hour or so. long leisurely lunch begins at noon. leave by 3:30-4. we've also been known to take in movies and/or 9 holes at the local course. oh, also only a 10 minute commute from my house.

so we are pretty much left here with absolutely no management-type supervision.
