Crusing the record store today and the owner asked me if anyone online had written about Smoosh yet. Didn't think so and a search reveals nothing here but she was pretty adamant that she thought it was pretty darn good even if it is a 10 and 12 year old girl at the helm. Spin magazine online called it "Young Tori Amos meets a lo-fi Sleater Kinney with a little hip-hop thrown in for good measure." The MP3 at the site is surprisingly good, again, considering the age of the girls.

A live KEXP studio performance can be heard here: http://www.kexp.org/aspnet_client/KEXPV ... st=SZ%20in

All in all it's fairly remarkable.

Saw them opening for Death Cab for Cutie and thought they were horrible. I felt bad about thinking that until I realized that spot opening for DCFC could have been held by one of many deserving local bands here in Seattle and now I just resent the hell out of the fact that they get attention for being young.

They are just more novelty for the Barsuk clan to lap up like the Rilo Kiley child star connection.

I just finished listening to the KEXP files, and the quality varies pretty wildely. To me the warbling is the real weak link, although it works occasionally for me. Hey, they were 9 and 11 at that point and while I have to agree about the novelty of it all I still think I heard albums from adults last year that were far worse than anything I've heard from these two kids.

I definitely agree with the last statement, but the inevitable Barsuk signing and the constant "they're good, and they are only 10 & 12" around here is pretty annoying". I'm looking at it from a local music scene POV.

When I am seeing GREAT loal bands like The Lights open for Franz Ferdinand and The Wrens, but can't get the DCFC slot because its reserved for Smoosh it gets pretty stupid for me.
