Been playing this quite a bit the past few weeks. Lovely new Swedish artists.
Fontan - Aktionskammarn
Review:
Featuring the honeyed vocal talents of Swedish beauty Sarah Assbring (aka El Perro Del Mar) ‘Aktionskammarn’ is the debut full length from Gothenburg based production duo Jesper Jarold and Johan Melin. These two veteran musicians, recording together as Fontän, have found a happy medium between analogue and digital realms, and have created a rather peculiar record sitting somewherealongside pop, electronica and the retro lounge-core of Broadcast or Stereolab. On first run through I wasn’t sure about it, it’s not hard for the explosion of 8-bit sounds and chopped up drums to jar you initially or detract your attention from the more obviously beautiful parts of the tracks (windswept guitars, decomposing analogue synths) but give it time and the songs are bound to win you over. They’re fresh, fun and more importantly they don’t take themselves too seriously; skip to ‘…You’ which is like Goblin and John Carpenter jamming with New Order, not a collaboration I would have envisioned but it’s strangely poppy and incredibly addictive. A very interesting debut from a band which are sadly likely to go unnoticed in the UK, give Fontän a chance and be safe in the knowledge that you’re getting a privileged look into Scandinavian music culture that doesn’t involve Abba.
