Wow. Didn't expect very much out of this, but on the very first listen the first six tracks are all sounding great. The songwriting is at least as good as Heaven Tonight. My only complaint is that the guitar has a little too much modern-sounding distortion on it, but overall the production is not bad at all.

Anyone else got this album?

I'll go to waterloo soon, today = payday.

I can treat myself to a cd.

So was I. I figured a band as inconsistent as Cheap Trick was bound to get old and bad. However, everything about this has a really good vibe. The packaging is cool too.

Wow, 4 1/2 stars on AMG:

Quote:
Cheap Trick's recorded work has been so inconsistent for so long, bouncing back and forth between belabored attempts to reach radio and self-conscious returns to their classic early work, it's kind of a shock to discover that 2006's Rockford is a good, solid Cheap Trick record. Scratch that — it's a very, very good Cheap Trick record, glistening with Beatlesque harmonies, sugary hooks and snarling guitars, and built on a set of songs that emphasize their strengths without seeming fussy or formulaic. They also don't seem tired or juvenile, either, nor do the band try to rock too hard or heavy, the way they did on the good but occasionally stilted Steve Albini-produced 1996 self-styled comeback, Cheap Trick. Albini is back for portions of Rockford, as is Jack Douglas, the producer behind their early masterworks, and 2000 rock's flavor of the month Linda Perry drops by for a single too — but far from being a case of too many cooks spoiling the soup, it's more that each producer/engineer/collaborator helps bring out a different aspect of Cheap Trick. Sure there are songs that serve up crunching hard rock along with a little bit of streamlined arena rock, but there are pop songs built upon the British Invasion, bittersweet ballads, even a little bit of disco-funk on "One More." When all these different sounds are put together, it does indeed add up to the most diverse album they've made in many a moon, but since there's such a strong emphasis on melody, vocal harmonies, and guitar hooks, all wrapped up in three-minute songs, it also winds up as Cheap Trick's first genuine power pop album since their heyday, and their best album since Dream Police. After all these years and all those uneven albums, it's a bit of a surprise to have the band deliver an album this good completely out of the blue but, as their catalog proves, Cheap Trick have never done things the easy way — and it's better to finally get a very, very good Cheap Trick record unexpectedly, some 27 years after the last good one, instead of not getting one at all.

It is an excellent record.
But then, so is the 1997 self-titled one.
You all should really check that one out if you haven't already.

I would say that they are on a par with one another, with a slight edge going to Rockford — it's just a bit more consistent.

I meant to pick up the '97 S/T one yesterday - but when they didn't have it I got Rockford instead. That's next on the list.

I caught a local radio show a couple weeks ago that played something off this and a Paul Westerberg song off the Open Season soundtrack called "Love You in the Fall".

Both songs were solid.

Sounded like vintage Cheap Trick.

I've been hyping this all year since it came out. Just listened on the way in to work, actually, and I still enjoy it as much as I did the day it came out. Hell of a fun album, one of the best things I bought this year. Absolutely astounding this came out of a band that's been around this long.

Only stumble on the album is "O Claire" - I just don't like where it's placed, it screws up the flow.

This is pretty good, but I like Special One better.

The single ("Scent Of a Woman") sucked so badly it completely dissuaded me from listening to the rest of the album. I hope the rest of it is better. (I can't see how it could be worse.)

There's some really good tracks on "Special One" but I think "Rockford" is waaaaay more consistant.

For those who like CT in power pop mode, "Rockford" is a must have.

Yeah, that's pretty accurate. The good songs on Special One are REALLY good and WAY better than anything on Rockford, but there are also a couple of duds. Rockford is pretty much dud-free, but also doesn't have any just flat-out awesome songs, either. It's just a good, consistent album.

I hated Special One when it came out. Sold it. When Rockford came out, I decided to grab a really cheap used copy and found I actually liked it, but I think the above assessment is correct - a very mixed album. What's good is very good, but what's not is not.
