I'm listening to The Doves' new song right now and it just dawned on me how similar Jimi Goodwin's voice sounds like that of Rob Dickinson's. I actually got excited thinking -- "HOLY SHIT, IS THAT CATHERINE WHEEL?!" Then, realized..."Duuuuude, it's fuckin' Doves!" Don't get me wrong, I'm totally diggin' the new tune.

Am I late on this realization (not surprised if I am)?

I can hear a similarity, but the Catherine Wheel dude is far more detached/robotic and androgynous in his delivery. It worked perfect for what they did, though.

What's the release date for the new one, T? I'm eager to check it out and see them tour.

According to their website, the release date is February 21st...dunno if that's just for the UK or for the rest of us eager to get their grubby lil' hands on it.

Interesting comparison. I've always thought that "The Cedar Room" off of Lost Souls sounded quite a bit like CW.

Thanks, Tania. I've been lurking/posting as I've got time, but I'm being absolutely slayed by work right now.

I hope to be back on track by end of the month...

Hmmm, I agree with what I think Dusty is trying to say, the second Catherine Wheel album is so much better than anything the Doves have done that a comparison seems almost pointless. Kind of like comparing the Beatles to Badfinger or something like that. But they have made some good songs. Too bad they can't come up with an album that has more than about two or three of them, though. I thought the "bonus" disc that came with Last Broadcast was the best part. But maybe it's more fair to compare them with what CW has done lately, which would probably give the edge to the Doves :)

Chrome is a classic!

Has everyone lost his or her mind?

Jesus, I lose Internet access because of the rain and this board is going insane. Glad I wasn’t able to follow up on my SUV post, but people really were at FnB throat for his little rant.

No, no, NO Catherine Wheel is not better than Doves. This is how I break it down, in 1992 when CW released their debut album they weren’t even close to being one of the best shoegazer bands, not even top 10. In the year 2000 Doves made an album that stood out and made some take notice. Doing music that I’m not sure anyone else was doing at that time. In 2002 they released one of the better British rock albums this century, arguably. They are doing interesting things and I think they will continue to impress.

I just read your review Davey, and need to listen to that album again. I really liked it at the time but 1993 was such an amazing year for music that it didn’t even make my top 10. Notable albums: Giant Steps, A Storm In Heaven, Siamese Dream, Gentlemen, Modern Life Is Rubbish, Suede, 13 and Mezcal Head just to name some off the top of my head.

It’s all just opinion and felt like throwing mine out there. Where is Chrome_CW when he is needed?

I'm right here!!

lol - I was just thinking "What is BeeOK thinking??" when you I read the first part of your post and litterally laughed out loud when I got to the last comment......

Tania, is the Doves song you are referring to "Black and White Town"? That's the only new Doves song I've heard so far.....

I don't know where to start here because I LOVE the Doves, but their current catalog doesn't yet even begin to compare to Catherine Wheel's IMHO...

One thing I AM impressed with though is how they are developing and changing their sound from album to album - that was one thing that made Catherine Wheel VERY special to me....they never sat around and tried to simply recreate their sound from a previous album. While Ferment and Chrome are both often used as examples of the Shoegazer movement both albums sounded quite different. And the move from Chrome to Happy Days was night and day. I must admit that even as big of a fan as I am of CW I didn't initally really get into Ferment that much until I first heard Chrome Similarly while I liked Lost Souls by The Doves initially I wasn't completely sold on it - it wasn't until I heard Last Broadcast that I rediscovered Lost Souls and got more into it.....So in conclusion about the who is the greater band we'll have to see where The Doves are after 5 albums :) But personally I don't ever see them passing CW in my mind....

In answer to the original question I must admit that while I do here some slight CW influences in Jimi Goodwin's voice I also hear his voice when I hear both Guy Garvey(Of Elbow) and Chris Martin(Coldplay) sing. I'm sure if prompted I could go into all kinds of comparisons in terms of tonal quality and vocal range and whatnot....but honestly I tend not to focus on that and instead am left feeling that Rob's voice is more emotive. This is not to take anything away from any of these other artists.

Obviously I'm going to be biased but those are my thoughts and while I encourage those of you who might not have paid as much attention to albums like Chrome when they came out(there were definitely some other great albums that came out that year) I will also acknowledge that while most of us share some tastes in music that we defintely have slightly different tastes - Need we have anymore proof than The Wrens of that??

Also, I'm not certain if all of your are aware but Rob Dickinson did 2 tracks on Jimmy Chamberlin Complex album that is due out on 1/25(Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins drug OD fame). He also just wrapped up work on his own solo album and apparently they are shopping it around to labels right now. Someone on the CW list that I belong to claims to have heard it and say that it sounds phenominal....I'll be sure to let you all know when it becomes available.

In the meantime for those of you who might be interested I've gone ahead and shared the Jimmy Chamberlin album on Clever Cactus. My username is Chome_CW there as well - The two Rob Dickinson tracks are:

Life Begins Again
Love is Real

Hope you all enjoy :)

Meh i don't really hear too much of a similarity in voices. Im of a similar opinion to Chrome_CW, that CW is superior to Doves. That could be because I was listening to Ferment before i checked my Obner though.

I like Doves well enough, but I prefer Lost Souls over Last Broadcast and the new song. No Doves song comes close to 'Texture', 'Black Metallic' or 'Crank'.

Well, just to clarify, I was trying to compare Doves' second album with Catherine Wheel's second. But yeah, what you said.
