It's amusing you bring up this song. My friends father was a royal asshole to him and his sister growing up. He never beat them or anything, but he would fuck with them all the time and just treat them like general shit.

Anyway, one day he was driving them back to their mother's after a weekend chock full o' conflict and "Cats In The Cradle" came on the radio. Not missing a chance to get his father back, he sang the song, softly at first, getting louder as the song progressed. He said his dad had to pull over the car to finish sobbing. Didn't fix the asshole, but it's funny thinking a 12 year old kid bring that prick to his knees.

First 2 that jumped up in my head are both J. Armatrading: Save Me and The Weakness In Me.

R. Kelly-I Believe I Can Fly.

I just want to jump up on the table and spread my wings everytime I hear that song. So inspirational and emotional, I'm gonna go have a good cry now.

Low - "In Metal"

They played this upon request when my father and I saw them play in Toronto a couple years ago. I was touched, because it was pertinent, but my dad didn't quite clue in.

it's a much better song if you sing it in a cheesy South Park heavy metal voice.

Ayah, tell me you can listen to "Color Him Father" and not be moved?

C'mon now. Download it. Listen to it. It's like Bill Cosby if he were The Temptations being a stepfather to kids who've lost their real dad in the Vietnam War. Awesome, awesome song.

It's honest and tender, unlike R Kelly's tune which is one of the worst things ever recorded.

I'll throw out a country tunes, by Willie Nelson: "Always on my Mind"

for personal reasons, it gets me every time.

It gets me, too.
Good call.

Summers Kiss /Faded by the Afghan Whigs, after hearing it at least 1000 times, continues to give me chills upon each listen.

Perhaps some unconventional choices

"Long Black Veil"-M. Wilkens & D. Dill(as sung by Johnny Cash)

Lost In The Supermarket-The Clash(I couldn't tell you everything Joe is trying to convey here, but the "protagonist" of that song is just a little too close for comfort.)

Sanctuary by Luka Bloom
This is to Mother You by Sinead O'Connor
I'm Still Here by Tom Waits

Makes me tear up every time.

(I third Senator's Willie Nelson track)

This is the first one I actually agree with - simple lyrics but completely relatable.

"I wasn't born, so much as I fell out"
"I drink a little, i feel a bit free"

William Bell's You Don't Miss Your Water ('til the well's run dry) had me thinking a thing or two earlier today. Great soul classic on Stax.

I'll also pony up with Lyle Lovett's Pontiac and nod with the Willie Nelson and toss out Forgiving You Was Easy.

Elivs Costello - "Indoor Fireworks"

About a week after me and my ex broke up I played a show and covered the song. I had always told her that song reminded me our relationship. She was there, she started crying. I was a mess playing the song. Bad idea, incredible song.

For sentimental reasons:
Radiohead- High and Dry
The Cure- Lovesong

2 of my favorite songs, yet makes me want to cry every time I hear them.

Paul Kelly - How to Make Gravy. Seriously, I think I could hear this song a million times & get choked up every time. Am I the only one who knows this song?
