"Alternate Reality" on (gulp!) Q101:

Listeners call in a request songs that would have been hits in an alternate reality, if the world were just. There are actually some pretty cool choices.

I heard:
Fishbone - "Ma and Pa"
and
Black Flag - "TV Party"

before the show ended.

Good concept, pretty well executed. I will listen again and probably call in to suggest some Television or Richard Hell.

is this part of their morning show? q101's apparently not doing nearly as well with their shuffle format as they thought they would. although, i do think they're trying. i heard 20 straight minutes of the clash last weekend and some top-notch songs this past weekend. the morning show that replaced mancow is awful, but i've only heard that from other people. that sounds like a good idea. of course, it'll probably be dumped in a few weeks because people will request album tracks from, like, staind.

Not part of the morning show, but a weekend thing. I think it was early Saturday night -- while The Kids are getting ready to go out on the town.

And yeah, they are struggling. But if this is the direction in which they're heading, I hope they make it. But I honestly have no faith in something like this surviving too long. Yeah, they WILL get a lot of Staind and crap like that. Unless the DJ hosting the show is a bit of a music snob like us and determined to play the legitimately underplayed/unplayed gems.

Of course, that would probably alienate their audience. So... really not much hope for this.

Bummer.

They should bring back Robert Chase and call it a day. My ex said that he heard him on the air while driving through Montana of all places.

Give me a radio show, damn it. The masses wouldn't like it, but at least the music would be good. No talking, either. Just the weather and music.

that Jack, Dave, shuffle format is doing horribly everywhere. Kind of a shame.

This isn't quite the same as Jack or whatever. They still have DJs and stuff.

It's doing OK here, but yeah - by definition, the format is set up for failure. The whole "it's like an iPod with all the different songs" concept...uh, you guys lost the whole iPod audience a good 5 years ago - & they're not coming back to radio.

Before much longer, radio is gonna be 99% country, Spanish or talk.

it's funny you mention that because there was a promo for this station running for months that had a clip of someone calling in and saying, "i just turned off my satellite radio to listen in!"

The one in Atlanta has jocks too. In fact, up until a month or so ago, it had an actual morning show.

The main problem seems to be I guess, like Diggity Dawg said in as many words, is that people smart enough to enjoy this format don't listen to the radio.

For example, the top rated rock station in Atlanta right now has a miniscule playlist (like 100 songs), but does sorta go with the very little chatter thing employed by the Jacks. They just play the same shit over and over instead of being eclectic. I can only imagine how bad it must be.
