They were primarily a singles band - and their glory days were a scant couple of years - so your best bet is Sladest - but if you're looking for proper albums...

1. Slayed?

2. Slade Alive
3. Ambrose Slade
4. any of the rest

Edit: I'm not sure how well Slade Alive will have stood the test of time. I mean, it includes a 6 or so minute version of "Born To Be Wild" as its climax, so buyer beware.

Also Ambrose Slade is early material from their skinhead days, before the band shortened their name. They weren't particularly good at songwriting yet, but they had energy and attitude to spare.

Are you joking? They wrote 'Merry Xmas Everybody' which only gets played about 1,934,849,000 times every December.

Yet, for some reason, American radio can't manage to fit it into the holiday rotation among the 53 daily plays of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." I'll trade you Elmo and Patsy straight up for Slade. You can even keep the hat.

I was just thinking about getting some more Slade after I downloaded their greatest hits, the late 70s-80s songs. I need some of the early stuff.

Here's a rare Obner thread where I can claim a tad of expertise...I've become a huge fan of this band over the last couple years.

For starters, "Sladest" isn't included in the current reissue campaign. And if you were gonna go the "hits' route I'd just point you to the "Get Your Boots On" - the only real US compilation.

But you mentioned you're looking into digging deeper into the albums. And as Rads mentioned, they were known as a singles band. But there's loads & loads of great tunes that were on the albums as well.

The "Alive!" anthology is really well done - it includes all 3 of their "in concert" albums + an EP of stuff recorded during their comeback show at Reading 1980. In particular, the aforementioned first "Alive!" album is a flat-out barnstormer.

Aside from that, of the albums that've been reissued so far my favorite is "Old New Borrowed And Blue". I think it's the perfect mix of rockers & the band's more poppy side.

As Rad also mentioned, the "Beginnings/Play It Loud" 2-fer CD is pre-"Alive!" & very much a document of a band finding their way. Interesting stuff, but only as a purchase "down the line" after you've snagged the classics.

Honestly, some of my favorite albums of theirs haven't been reissued yet.

Sure - I also recommend checking out the AllMusic reviews of their stuff. Pretty spot-on, IMO...even though I liked "Nobody's Fools" more than they did.

Feel free to axe me more if you need.
