70's - Punk
80's - New Wave
90's - Grunge
00's - Poo Bear and Tickle Me Music?, Southern Rock Revival?, Strokes-retro?, ???

I'm thinking in terms of Rock and not Rap.

But what will indie rock be simplified to ala grunge is more the point I guess.

And what will we call "indie rock" in 2010 since it's currently being stolen?

Well, "College Rock" became "Alternative" which has become "Indie Rock". So, maybe back to "College Rock" or "College Radio Music"?

Who knows?
Who cares?

It's just music that we like.

we've been calling it indie rock for at least 13 years, they can have it.

Don't care really. Just things I'm thinking about while I procrastinate at work. It's all music we like when it comes down to it but the whole point of this board is to bring out your inner music nerd or give some social interaction for the basement dwellers.

I guess this thread isn't as thought provoking as your 6th Los Lobos thread or the 10 albums I still listen to by bands I'm supposedly bored with.

Yeah, good call. :?

As far as rock goes, this seems to be the prevalent mainstream phenomenon among the kiddies.

Though by that logic "arena rock", rather than punk, would be what the '70s are remembered for.

Yeah, I thought about that. Comes from perspective of who is remembering it. I mean the 80's could easily be rap.

And good call on Emo.

00s - In the vein of Drinky's response - mp3 > digital music / mass piracy.

Growing up in Lawrence, KS: college rock (80s), indie rock (early 90s - since Sebadoh III). I still can't grasp what 'alternative' or 'emo' applies to.

it will be known for the sheer amount of music that people took in, due to the internet.

This cracked me up.

I think the 90s are generally remembered for grunge/alt rock thing (Lollapalooza, Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden), massive popularity of hip-hop (Dre/Snoop/Pac/Biggie) and country/pop music (Backstreet Boys/Britney et al, Garth Brooks). That was what was popular and what the media paid attention to, and hence, what will probably be remembered better. I don't really know what the current decade will be memorable for. Probably the Strokes-type music, Eminem/50 Cent. The Napster/iPod stuff will probably be the signature of this decade. The fact that I'm blanking on specific music though, probably speaks volumes.

If we're talking about a particular genre, I think rock will be remembered for the "retro" sound like White Stripes and Strokes. Maybe for Nu Metal by the mainstream but let's hope not.

Outside of genres, it's going to be remembered for the digitization of music, mass exposure for bands via the internet and piracy.

I don't know if Nu-metal really stuck around long enough but who knows. I agree let's hope not.

Perhaps, but outside of the Napster/iPod thing, I don't think there has been a specific trend that truly plants itself within the minds of people, like grunge did, for instance. The emo stuff probably qualifies, with the proliferation of myspace and all that. I guess that's probably something that will be associated with this decade. Let's hope the late '00s bring something else.

It's still the only thing the local "modern rock" station around here plays. Not sure it's all "Nu Metal" but stuff that's similar.

The '00s will be remembered for something those who lived through it will barely recognize. Just like every other decade.
