Have any of you taken Dale Carnegie courses? I'm thinking of taking the Public Speaking Mastery or their original Dale Carnegie Course (Effective Communication and Human Relations). The cost is on the hefty side ($1495 - $1595), but my employer is willing to pay for it and am wondering if its worth the cost.

If you have taken or know of similar courses, I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks!

This may sound like a smartass answer, but it's not meant to be. Have you ever read the book?

if your employer pays, then just take it. i find most of the training classes nearly worthless, however... but that's just me.

I got the "Training for Managers" certificate(or some shit like that)a few years ago compliments of my job..All I remember is that it was very boring, and I would have actually rather worked than take the course..I guess it looks good on the resume..Good luck , the man himself was pretty interesting.

What are the areas of weakness you're trying to improve?
If it's public speaking, I'd say just go to places where there's lots of public speakers (try on open-mic poetry event or something like that) and just study the shit out of the presenters who are clearly skilled at commanding an audience. Posture, volume and body language are the 3 biggies for mastering public speaking. In the case of an open-mic event, maybe even write some stuff of you own and videotape yourself presenting purely for the purpose of correcting your deficiencies.

That'll be $200, please. PM me and I'll give you my address to have your employer send me a check.

agreed. i've been to plenty.....you'll learn a few things, but prepare for boredom and "obvious fluff" quite a bit of the time.

I've thought of joining Toastmasters, but that would require going on my own time on a biweekly basis. I'd rather not give up my personal time to go.

Work wants me to take a "formal" training course to fine tune my presentation skills. I'm cool with that but am finding a hard time locating a course that's worthwhile.

I've taken the original course. It helped me a lot, as I used to be very timid and quiet. I don't see you having that problem, and it's not the most excited thing, but there are certainly some good pointers on talking to people (but nothing earth shattering, if you ask me).

What?! I don't come across as quiet and timid? I need to work on that.
