I had a phone interview with U Alaska Fairbanks and it was -55, freezing fog. Damn. One of the dudes interviewing me had ridden his bike to work. Does the dark make you crazy? 'Cause from here I don't think it would bother me; I've always liked winter--but I've never experienced temps like that and if I were there I suppose I might feel differently.
no, i actually like the dark, because i have a hard time getting to sleep if i cant get the room im sleeping in really dark. which makes for a huge pain in the ass in the summer because not only is there 24 hour daylight, but from 10-12 pm, when you want to go to sleep, is when it becomes hottest. it can reach +25-30 C just when you want to go to bed. the cold temperatures are definately something you have to get used to. even me, for example, when i came back home from edmonton, where it can be much warmer, i had trouble adjusting. if im there for the very short fall and the start of winter, when i can acclimatize myself, i can take much colder temperatures, but i cant just drop myself in and expect not to be at least a little cold. and people in yellowknife ride their bikes everywhere, no matter what the temperature. theyre great if you dont want to go to the bother of trying to get your car started and its too far to walk, which can be a problem in yellowknife because everything is so spread out here.
