here's something a friend of mine does... FOR FUN... on weekends out here. He's not in this particular video, but he did participate in the Halloween competition. When I asked him again why the hell he does this, he said: "it builds character." ;)

For those not familiar with the term cyclo-cross:

wikipedia Wrote:
Cyclo-cross (sometimes Cyclocross, CX, cyclo-X or 'cross) is a form of bicycle racing. Races take place typically in the autumn and winter (the international or "World Cup" season is September-January), and consists of many laps of a short (2–3 km or 1–2 mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike whilst navigating the obstruction and remount in one graceful motion. Races for senior categories are generally between 30 minutes and an hour long, with the distance varying depending on the ground conditions. The sport is strongest in the traditional road cycling countries such as Belgium and France (and particularly so in Flanders).

Cyclo-cross has some obvious parallels with cross-country mountain bike and criterium racing. Many of the best cyclo-cross riders cross train in other cycling disciplines. However, cyclo-cross has reached a size and popularity that racers are specialists and many never race anything but cyclo-cross races. Cyclo-cross bicycles are similar to racing bicycles: lightweight, with narrow tires and drop handlebars. However, they also share characteristics with mountain bicycles in that they utilize knobby tread tires for traction, and cantilever style brakes for clearance needed due to muddy conditions. They have to be lightweight because competitors need to carry their bicycle to overcome barriers or slopes too steep to climb in the saddle. The sight of competitors struggling up a muddy slope with bicycles on their shoulders is the classic image of the sport, although unridable sections are generally a very small fraction of the race distance.

my ex-bf cyclocrossed (if that's even the correct term). I used to watch him race and although it looked like a lot of fun, I'd never last even one round.

Are you going to give it a shot, Dana?

Cyclocross is one of the best forms of cycling there is! It is huge in Belgium and The Netherlands. Over there they set up huge beer tents and the courses actually go through the tents where drunken spectators can enjoy the action. There has been times when the drunks actually throw their beer at the racers (and in turn will get kicked out of the beer tent).

The point of the barriers (which are usually 2x lumber or caskets in some cases) is to force the riders off the bikes. This is supposed to help keep the feet/extremities moving and keep them from freezing up. Some races actually have portions go over beaches so the riders have to run for a longer distance.

Not only is it fun to do, but it is a blast watching! "If you have the means I highly recommend it!"

That was pretty awesome though if I tried it I'd probably end up like the dude that tried to ride down the steps. I don't know if I'd have even been able to make it over the coffin.

Yea, this winter I'm getting a new bike and I'm seriously thinking of getting a cyclo-cross rig because of our boring state. I almost feel like an idiot on a mountain bike in IL. Although, Palos and WI has some great local trails.

They're great commuting bikes. It's my favorite bike to ride that i own.

And red, you should go up to mickey finn's on milwaukee ave. in libertyville. 38 miles. Then come back after a few. You can do it.

Austin is murderous with the hills. I'm kicking ass though.

was this a running race or a bike riding race  Seemed like bunches of people were apprehensive of their ability to hop that coffin. Was their mult. coffins. The one I could understand since it was on an incline, but damn.

That was one hell of a save for that guy going around the curve.

I wish I could attend/race for of these things. Love the atmosphere!

Went to watch this yesterday... I didn't stick around for the men and women's pro races later in the day (it was totally miserable weather yesterday), but I can vouch that it was a fun, muddy mess. And yes, the Gentle Lovers team DID ride their bikes through the mud wearing only red speedos with pink hearts....
