I'm answering some super-generic interview questions on behalf of my boss for a magazine article. The last question posed is this - A Young person's guide to the past 5 years in music would include....??? - and I can't answer it. I'm still young, but fuck. Why is the interviewer such a narf.

What do you say?

proper response:

"That's a terribly simplistic question."

Is he asking for 5 mainstream albums or something?

Exactly and only what I wrote.

I gave him these:
Iron and Wine
Animal Collective
Lightning Bolt
Six Organs of Admittance
The Books

All that came to mind.

Hahaha.

I would have put Kid A on the list. I'm sure Radcliffe would have as well.

Pretty sure he'd say Meadowlands.

Holy crap, how could I forget Peter Gabriel's Up, which was #1 on my 2002 Listmania! You are absolutely correct, Gabriel wins this one.

Little group called The White Stripes... I bet he's heard of them.

Also:
OutKast, John Mayer, NERD/Neptunes, Radiohead, Jay-Z, the Britney/Xtina/Pink/Avril axis, the Matrix, American Idols

That's such an open-ended question, but these are the ones that have made the biggest splashes in the mainstream. Which is kinda sad when you think about it.

i'd include:

Dismemberment Plan - Emergency and I
Death Cab - Photo Album, etc.
YYYs
Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin
Kid A
Missy Elliott's 2K-2K2 stuff or Timbaland productions
Neptunes
Clipse
The Rapture - Out of the Races
Interpol - Turn On
the Strokes - Modern Age ep
White Stripes - 1 or 2 songs
Blood Brothers, Converge, Lightning Bolt
Ladytron and the whole electro thing
etc.

i mean, these are things i think have some resonance with kids into mostly non-mainstream stuff.

Another angle could be to recommend artists who have broke in the last five years but cite albums before they broke even if they were pre-'99:

Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
White Stripes - De Stijl
Death Cab For Cutie - The Photo Album
Black Eyed Peas - Bridging The Gap
OutKast - Aquemini
Modest Mouse - The Moon And Antartica
Chevelle - Point #1
