I've been following this story and am just saddened that it turned out this way.

wonder what happened to those fools - get stuck in the snow? this happens a few times every year. people go up into the mountains in november and get caught in a blizzard and try to hike out. bad idea.

Dammit that sucks. Normally these stories don't interest me, but I identified with this guy for some reason.

Something similar happen here a couple of weeks ago. Two members of a University Mountaineering club died in a blizzard in the Cairngorms mountains.

You should always try to dig a snow hole because you have no chance of making it out in those sort of conditions (4 feet of snow, 120mph winds, zero visibility).

Very sad indeed. I still haven't heard how he got those directions either.

mapquest.

1. Go north on I-5
2. Take exit 98
3. Go west. Get of highway and go over coast range mountains on small forest road. The highway is much slower
4. Turn north on 101

thank you for using mapquest

I read about those two climbers and instantly thought of you, Darrin. Don't go hiking in those conditions!

Unfortunately I'm too sensible but I'll be really kicking my heels till March! If I had the money I'd take a Winter Mountain Survival course but I don't so that's a no go.

Yeah. I'm pretty happy Senor Six and I did our research before planning to hike the Pyranees in April. Covered in snow. The South-Eastern Spanish mountains were frickin' cold enough at night as it was.

That's what they say is best- stick together.

I was reading about him, and he was a sensible guy w/ lots of outdoor experience.

Too bad it turned out this way- I was rooting for him.

It's always the ones who go for help...

My neighbor is a triathlete. Her friends all went to central america somewhere last spring to go diving, and she got held up at work and couldn't go. They get on the boat, it drops off some snorkelers on an island, then motors a mile out to sea and the engine dies. These people are all extremely fit, excellent swimmers, and the island's right there where they can see it. They all went for it except the boat driver. There was a current, and they all missed the island. I think only 1 or 2 of the 5 were found alive, and of course the boat driver was found first, safe and sound.

when this eventually gets to "i shouldn't be alive" on the discovery channel, it's not going to feel the same because i'll know the father didn't survive.

That's terrible. Not that it matters, but I bought my current MP3 player based on one of his reviews.

Yeah, as an outdoor person, rule numero uno is not to venture out if yr lost unless you know how to survive. Very sad indeed. Can't say though that I wouldn't have done the same to save my wife. Crazy.

I remember watching him on Tech TV and I valued his opinions on CNET. He seemed like a good guy. My heart goes out to his family.
