I am currently unemployed because of this same situation. There's a reason people say not to do it.

I work with my girlfriend. I was really unsure about asking her out at first too but it's worked out. One thing that helped is that we didn't let anyone at work know we were dating until a year into the relationship. A bit extreme maybe but if things didn't work out, we would have been the only ones who knew.
