Went to see them on New Year's again this year for their 3-night stand at the 9:30 Club in DC. Man, what a 3 nights. Keeping it simple--Lucero, J Roddy, and the Alabama Shakes rocked the house down. Truckers played incredibly, Barbe was a solid part of the evenings. He isn't as charismatic as Shonna, but he can keep a deep groove.
Setlists were kinda tame, except for night one with them opening with Wednesday--but with Barbe filling in, I'm sure they couldn't just pull any random track out and play it. Booker T on NYE was amazing. They played Time Is Tight, Green Onion (midnight), Sitting On The Dock of the Bay, and Potato Hole from his repertoire--and then he sat in for all the DBT songs. In fact, they billed themselves as Booker T and the DBTs on NYE. On the rail all three nights, and as always it was incredible. Glad the band is getting a rest. They brought the rawk all three nights, so maybe--just maybe their next album will be of that persuasion.
Back to Lucero, they played several new songs. They had the backing horns, so that was a treat. One or two were full-on rockers. Looking forward to catching them and J Roddy when they play together in March in DC. Alabama Shakes are gonna be huge. The lead singer is just so damn charismatic, and she plays incredibly. Booker T came out and played half their set and it was incredible to see her holding her own with a genuine legend. Their album is gonna be huge. Once people see them live, they'll be sold. Speaking of Booker T, the dude looks great for his age. Looks maybe to be in his 40s. Must be taking care of himself.
This is how I rang in my new year. The bearded guy making out with pretty lady in the lower right corner up by the stage would be me and FemRabbit at midnight
