Just posted the latest edition of "Fracsploitation!" (my old-school funk & soul podcast) to Hip Displeasure. Here's the link, suckas:

REVIEW:

Art Jerry Miller - “Finger Lickin’ Good”

Nice quiet, slow jam funk instrumental. I'm stirring a cocktail as I listen to this.

Eddie Bo - “Check Your Bucket”

Pakistani's have a national Eddie Bo day?!! Maybe that's because they can relate to a guy singing about a hole in his bucket since that's about all they have over there. Oh, buckets and nuclear warheads, that is. A national Pakistani political slogan should be: "A bucket in every mud-built shelter, a missle silo above every cave!"

Ilana - “Where Would You Be Today?”

south pacific gets his old man rant on: I just want to say that it's a crime. CRIME, I say that there isn't more diversity on the radio these days. It's clearly the result of programmers/corporate managers who don't give a rat's ass about actual music. Just flip through your FM dial these days and you'll see what I mean. What a discouraging wasteland. Growing up in the 70's and 80's there was literally a musical smorgasborg waiting for you on the air where you could get funk, soul, disco, jazz (soft and experimental!), classical, techno/dance, top 40, metal, or college radio at your fingertips. Fuck that now though. Too bad. Too damn bad for fans of actual music. Whenever I hear of those occasional stories where radio programmers lock themselves into their booths to protest the soul-sucking musical crap they are forced to play over and over I cheer them on with gusto. And that's "where I am today", folks. [/rant over]

Little Jimmy Tyson and The Highway Robbers - “Who Will Be the Next Fool?”

Boy, I really like this. High energy and very remniscent of Mr. James Brown's "Sex Machine".

Lee Fields - “Let a Man Do What He Wanna Do”

Another bobbing, nod your head groove here. Good choice.

Stefan - “Holy Cow”

Somewhere, somehow, I have heard this song before. Was it ever used in a commercial, maybe? Man, this is a throwback if I've ever heard one. If this is funk, then it's an old man funk.

Esther Phillips - “From a Whisper to a Scream”

This depresses the hell out of me and not in a good way. Thanks for making me a miserable bastard with this one Bob. Oh wait...wait a minute. That's right. I'm already a miserable bastard anyways. Sorry. Carry on.

Rodriguez - “Sugar Man”

Anti-drug anthem?!! This has got to be my favorite track on this Fracsploitation mix. Weird science-fiction strings and freak-out at the end gets my vote. Well done my man. Well done.

Can a would-be brother get another?

Nice Bob.

I'm going to this on Friday:

Seems like it'd be right up your alley. I'll report back.
