This topic was spurred by postmersh's comment in the "In Good Company" thread.

Due to my wife and I not sharing the same taste in movies and the fact that she just doesn't want to see many, I started going to movies by myself a few years ago.

I felt strange the first time I did it, but I don't have any qualms about it anymore. Of course, most of the time I go to matinees (less crowds), but I have done it on weekend nights as well.

It's just that hardly any of my friends share my tastes in movies, or just don't have the desire to see many. I, on the other hand, love to see movies in the theater and I usually see around 30 a year (in the theater).

Does anyone else go to movies alone, or am I in the minority?

Dude I go to the moveis alone all the time. I actually prefer it at times. If I want to see a movie and my wife does not I have no other option (besides getting a movie mistress).

Spend enough time in cities where you don't know anyone, and need to waste a few hours, going to movies alone becomes a great idea. I'd setimate I've seen more movies alone since 2001 than I have with anybody.

The only thing I don't like is the lack of somebody to "postgame" with, but I guess that's what I have you collection of asshats for ;)

I go alone all the time. I usually go right after work. It's a nice way to relax after a hard day at work or school, etc.

i don't mind it, but damn do i prefer seeing movies with other people, if only for the post-film discussions/reactions, as well as the wink-wink "isn't that funny that we're the only 2 people who just got that horribly lame joke?" stuff.

yeah.

I totally agree. It's a lot more fun to analyze the shit out of movies.

Especially if you are like me and tend to hate everything you see. Helps to have some reel you in a bit.

I've flown solo to a GWAR gig, but I'd never dream of seeing a picture alone. Then again, I average about 2-3 trips to the cinema/year.

So you were the guy going to the films at Budget-South in Milwaukee about five years ago, and just whacking it like a motherfucker. And for the most inappropriate films. Then, standing up, facing the audience, and shooting all over them.

Asshole.

Sometimes you'll go to the arty cinema and there will be this really cool, bohemian looking girl in the ticket booth and you'll ask for "one for A Very Long Engagement" or whatever and she'll just blurt out "WHHAATTT???!!!" like no one ever in movie history has ever asked for just one ticket and then you have to explain that you only want one ticket because nobody else is with you and you are, infact, going to the movies alone.

But once you've actually purchased the ticket it's actually a much better experience. Especially in the afternoon's when you don't have to deal with kids and couples.

I've missed so many movies because I didn't want to go alone. I've been to a few, but find it less enjoyable. I guess I realize it'll be hard to find someone to talk about the movie with, not that people I go to movies with really engage in any post-movie conversation.

I need cooler friends.

Can eat in a restaurant by myself, but have not tried the movie by myself yet. I could probably do it.

Have not been able to go to shows by myself. I feel too vulnerable and/or dorky.

Yeah, me neither. The mere thought gives me the willies. But not as much as the thought of going to shows alone.

shudder

Movies alone, no sweat. Shows alone, I need to really feel the love for that bad or really need to get out of the house.

I don't mind going to the movies alone. I've been going to the first show of the day usually and then sneaking into other movies and a partner in crime would only slow you down. It's all about stealth.

See,
I've been to shows by myself many times - it's awkward, but sometimes it's worth it. Plus, there have been times when I've gone to a show alone and bumped into someone I knew/ended up hanging out with them. Plus, not to seem macabe, but I often (1-2 times/wk) grab a bite after work by myself, often at a sitdown place. Yesterday was solo sushi. Mmmmm....sushi. That might be a nice post-gym plan myself...
It's just that the whole seeing a movie by myself thing seems creepy, for some reason. I can see it making me feel Ultra Lonely...

Yup. I used to do that all the time when I travelled for business. I hated being stuck in my room, ordering room service -- got old VERY quickly.

I've never done it, but I've considered it and I probably will eventually. The worst part about it for me is buying the ticket. "One please, I have no friends!"
