Didn't expect this attitude for Pfork. It was probably only a matter of time till it became cool but a good point nonetheless. Did they get my Obner Mix?

I just read this as well. They even point out the right omissions.

There's a bona fide country album in my top ten of this decade.

But people generallyt only say they like 'everything'. I'll bet most people who say that wouldn't like Phaoroh Sanders, Ivor Cutler or Smith & Selway or The Coachwhips and none of them fall into either the country or rap genres.

Most often than not people say they like 'everything' rather than face the embarrassment of actually naming names.

my wife and i always joke about 'except rap and country,' although my own taste seems to drift from rap these days.

I was with him right up to the "mainstream country these days isn't that bad" statement.

Yes it is.

No shit. That Donna Fargo shit is godawful though. I also think Dolly's "I Will Always Love You" is a fucking monster of a song.

I agree with a lot of what the article says, but they also seem to try to have it both ways. They talk about how the alt-country artists would have in the past been part of the country music scene proper but are being squeezed out by a formulaic Nashville, but then conclude that mainstream country (Nashville) ain't so bad after all.

I'm of the opinion that there is still some good country outside the alt-country realm, but its sure on a swift decline when it comes to the stuff cranked out for the mass market.

Still, the most encouraging thing to me is that watch a tv station like CMT and you do see some of the alt-country stuff and the bluegress stuff and the traditional country stuff mixed in with the slicker tunes.

Hell, format a radio that plays the whole breadth of country music coming out today, and I'd tune in. But, I ain't about to get excited about the way Nashville cranks out product boy band style.

That's the truth.
