a friend of mine was telling me
that at a recent joanna newsom concert
one of her musicians would knit on stage between playing her infrequent tambourine parts

thats the dumbest thing i've ever heard

Falstaff used to have a friend of the band join them on stage for an entire song at every show to do something ridiculous. Maybe tap a triangle once to end the song. Maybe he'd just sit there and read the paper on-stage. Sometimes he plugged in a toaster and made toast.

Whatever it was, it was silly and a lot of fun.

I can think of at least 10,000 dumber things. Dumb, but there's way dumberer.

when i saw her on this tour, the musician in question certianly didn't have much to do. she really only played for a couple of minutes over the course of the entire concert.

probably more entertaining to watch her knit then listen to the "music"...

joanna newsom isn't the kind of concert one should go to on a whim; either you love the record and then go see her, or you go because your girlfriend/date made you, and it will possibly get you action.

That's what I thought, but I thought he might actually might try to knit something more tasteful on the train.

This reminds me of that "Mel's Rock Pile" episode on SCTV when Dave Thomas portrayed Richard Harris singing "MacArthur Park" as his background singer would sit and read onstage during the lengthy instrumental breaks.
