DBT's could've easily been #1, but my love for the avuncular 'old man' from Dayton kept him at the top. As for the other 'Bob', my high expectations prolly kept 'Modern Times' from charting somewhat higher. That said, it's still better than most. Props to Neil Young for giving us the best 'live' record of the year. 2006 was a great year for music.

01. Robert Pollard - from a compound eye
02. Drive-by Truckers - a blessing and a curse
03. Sparklehorse - dreamt of light years in the belly of the mountain
04. M.Ward - post-war
05. Calexico - garden ruin
06. Benoit Pioulard - precis
07. The Keene Brothers - blues & boogie shoes
08. Minus 5 - gun album
09. Deadstring Brothers - starving winter report
10. Frank Black - fastman raiderman
11. Bob Dylan - modern times
12. Norman & Nancy Blake - back home in sulphur springs
13. Loose Fur - born again in the usa
14. The Hold Steady - boys & girls in america
15. Howe Gelb - 'sno-angel like you
16. Robert Pollard - normal happiness
17. Richard Buckner - meadow
18. Scott Biram - graveyard shift
19. Pernice Brothers - live a little
20. Tim Easton - ammunition
21. Gob Iron - death songs of the living
22. Midlake - the trials of van occupanther
23. Neko Case - fox confessor brings the flood
24. Destroyer - rubies
25. The Flaming Lips - at war with the mystics

Nice list, Mark! Based on your rankings of some albums on there, I'm forced to give them a second listen.

2006 was indeed a great year for music. Good to see the Norman & Nancy Blake make another list. I know your a much bigger Pollard/GBV fan than me, but he's your #1 and has three albums in your top 25 all above Farrar? I'm surprised. I haven't heard any of the 3 though.

Hey Guap,
I really tried with their new record. I wanted to like it. Loved the vibe, had a hard time with the songs. I never felt like it approached the quality of 'That Much Further West' which was fairly top shelf. I didn't even know you were back on the board. Did you post your list ? If so, I need to track it down.

I should've ranked 'Sulphur Spings' higher. I find myself reaching for it quite a bit lately...looking forward to NB's new record. As for my Gob Iron (Farrar) ranking, it would've been higher if not for Ander's tracks which are just fine, but they the lack that vibe I get from one of Jay's songs. Have you heard the new Son Volt record 'The Search'?

It's different, but good enough in its own way.

Track #8 "Sing me no hymns" ranks with their best stuff, and they definitely out-Springsteen The Killers on "I can get us out of here tonite."

Nice to see Deadstring Bros. I thought it was being considered an 05 release, but once I saw it on the list, I had to rate it. Fucking great album.

Yeah, now that it's on two lists, I'm fucking regretting not putting it on mine.

I'm not a huge fan of the gob iron record actually. I like it but it didn't make my top 20 so I didn't mean to really suggest you should have it higher. Just surprised I guess that you didn't. And at least live, I was also surprised to find that I liked Ander's tracks more than Jay's. I haven't heard the new Son Volt record but I did hear a few of the songs live and they sounded amazing.

Yeah, I've been back about a month and a 1/2. My list is on here somewhere. I'll find it and give it a bump. I love that new Lucero, it was my # 1, but I agree its not as good as tmfw.
