Looks like they're going to be coming quicker that we initially thought. It's the release this fall that's going to be The One to Hear.

Neil Young To Release 1971 Massey Hall Concert CD
Thursday January 25, 2007 @ 05:30 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

Following last fall's release of Live At The Fillmore East, the first album in the Neil Young Archives Performance Series, Reprise will issue Live At Massey Hall on March 13.

Young had been away from his Canadian roots for close to five years by 1971, a period which he had enjoyed success with Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young and as a solo artist. It was in the last form that Young returned to Toronto that year for two sold-out concerts at Massey Hall. With friends and family in attendance, Young played favourites such as "Down By The River," "I Am A Child" and "Ohio."

More significantly, concertgoers got to hear several new originals that Young would feature on his yet-to-be-released new album, Harvest. Classics "Old Man," "The Needle And The Damage Done" and "Heart Of Gold" were included in the set.

Producer David Briggs recorded both shows, though Young didn't hear them until 1996. "This is the album that should have come out between After The Gold Rush and Harvest," Young concedes 36 years after the performances.

"David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the record, but I was very excited about the takes we got on Harvest, and wanted Harvest out. David disagreed. As I listen today, I can see why."

Live At Massey Hall will hit stores in advance of the long rumoured Archives Volume 1 collection, which is said to be finally set for release this fall. The eight-CD, two-DVD set will include Young's music from 1963 to 1972 and feature a wealth of previously unreleased studio and live recordings, concert footage and rare memorabilia from the first decade of Young's career.

Though no track list for Live At Massey Hall has been released, here are the songs Young played there on Jan. 19, 1971:

* "On The Way Home"
* "Tell Me Why"
* "Old Man"
* "Journey Through The Past"
* "Helpless"
* "Love In Mind"
* "A Man Needs A Maid/Heart Of Gold"
* "Cowgirl In The Sand"
* "Don't Let It Bring You Down"
* "There's A World"
* "Bad Fog Of Loneliness"
* "The Needle And The Damage Done"
* "Ohio"
* "See The Sky About To Rain"
* "Down By The River"
* "Dance, Dance, Dance"
* "I Am A Child"

WOW is all I can say. I love this era of Neil.

Hmm...I'm not sure how I feel about 8 CDs just covering up to 1972, but I'll almost definitely be picking up Volume 2.

Yeah. As great as that Fillmore record is, it's a little slight. Guess I'm gonna need to start saving money now for this 8-disc set. It ain't gonna be cheap.

The article says that's not the official track list, it's just the set list for the concert. Hopefully he won't chop it down to six songs like Fillmore.

According to Thrasher's Wheat, that's supposed to be the tracklisting for the album.

Has "Bad Fog of Loneliness" ever been released on anything before? There's a few songs on there I'm sure I've never heard.

There's a trailer up on Neil's site for the Massey Hall 1971 album, out on March 13th. Looks to be a much, much longer album than the Fillmore record. Glad to see 'Journey Through the Past' makes it on there.

They are in chronological order, not release order. The Fillmore one was #2, even though it was released first.

I believe this counts as #1, as this was the first set of remastered songs to be release from the Archive.

I'm pretty sure #1 is an earlier show that hasn't been released yet.

I thought it was scheduled to come out pretty soon, too.

I'm pretty sure I can't find a single reference for this release.

The problem is that the label has "Neil Young Archives Performance Series, Disc 02" on Fillmore, and Massey has the same NYAPS logo in the upper left corner. The GH doesn't have the logo, nor is it really a performance. I just read some comments on other crap that said it's gonna be in the box due in the fall.

Last paragraph from this link:
Quote:
Installments in the Performance Series will be chronologically numbered, some released individually, others as bonus discs in the archival box sets. “Fillmore” is Disc 02 in the series. Only Young knows what Disc 01 will be, the source said, “and he ain’t talking!
