it is...right now. just like 80s new wave was dated and dead as a door nail in 1996. now suddenly it's alive and kicking. vh1, rhino, reissues, reunions - and most of all these modern bands who wear there 80s new wave influences on their sleeve.

yeah but the eighties were cool, and always were,....grunge won't have a revival, well at least not a respectable one. You see, there were great albums made by new wave bands. There are no classic albums that are grunge. And no, Nirvana isn't classic, as due to the existance of the Pixies and Pavement, Nirvana are irrelevant.

How old are you, again? Even when I was growing up in the 80s we knew it sucked. I still can't believe all the crappy styles that are coming back. Leg warmers and moon boots? Good God people! Whats next, skinny leather ties in board rooms and puffy, ratted hair in the theater?

I beg to differ. And who gets to decide what is "classic". Here are just a few grunge albums that I consider "classic":

Nirvana - Nevermind
Nirvana - In Utero
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Alice in Chains - Facelift

In fact, grunge is one of my favorite "styles" of music.

My vote is that this poll is the most irrelevant on the board.

Grunge is just another form of rock and roll.
There were great albums and some that weren't so great.
Just like in the 80's.

And yes, it WILL have a revival.
Trust me.
Everything does.

I think trip-hop is dating worse than grunge. I can still put on 'Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge' and listen to it happily, but have been choking on Tricky everytime I put him on. It doesn't sound as good to me as it did in the 90s.

Irrelevant actually means not being related to the subject at hand. Are you suggesting that Nirvana is not 'grunge'? If you mean that the quality of Nirvana's music hasn't stood the test of time and therefore is not even applicable to the discussion at hand, then I will disagree. I can still hear Nevermind and In Utero and remember how it first sounded even though some of the songs have been played to the point of boredom. I will also state that I think revisionism is an especially annoying trend in musical history.

okay, Massive Attack's Blue Lines is still aces, but overall I don't find as immensely appealing as I previously did. Perhaps that's just me, a trend of one.

I don't really understand "grunge" as a genre. IMO, the only thing most "grunge" bands really had in common was flannel (oh yeah, Seattle, too). Did Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam really ever sound that much alike. I don't see it.

man, grunge isn't about those bands, grunge is about:

nirvana
tad
mudhoney
gorilla
the dwarves

that is the definitive grunge sound. not pearl jam and alice in chains.

and yes, they have a lot more in common than flannel.

They why are Pearl Jam, AIC, and Soundgarden always mentioned as grunge bands?

Though I think I already know the answer to this....

because the mainstream rock press were dying for something to latch onto. the other bands i mentioned were real grunge, but aic, pearl jam, soundgarden were a safer and easier bet, because they all played a bit more similar to the bullshit metal that was still being promoted in their mags.

I think ragtime is pretty fucking dated at this point.

Oh, and monophonic chanting hasn't really put out a good song since the 14th century

No. Mid 90's dance music yes, but not Trip Hop. Maxinquaye, at least to me, will never sound dated. Not as relavant as a genre (if it is one), yes or not sounding as good as a genre, yes.

It's unfortunate that Astralwerks has chosen this moment to compile the first decade of the duo's career (mid-90s electronica seems to be in the deepest valley of cultural relevance that it may experience in the next twenty years

PFM about the Chemical Brothers collection. I thought they hit the nail on the head. I think Trip Hop has enough crossover potential with Soul & Hip Hop that it saves itself.

i think they're more punk than grunge. punk as in early hellacopters, zeke, turbonegro, supersuckers.

and the correct answer to this thread is: electroclash

I don't know why everyone is saying trip hop. It's not like Massive Attack, Portishead, and Morcheeba were in massive rotation on top 40 stations. I see trip hop kind of like I see shoegazer music - it has yet to reach its commercial apex (and may never will). That's not to say that it's easy to find someone that does the genre well, but I'm definitely not sick of trip hop. Give me a choppy low rider beat with lush female vocals and a sensual bass line - and I'm happy.

What the fuck are you talking about, man. Didn't you hear the latest Tibetan Buddhist Choir album? Jeesh...

Totally making a comeback.
