Just watched the filmic version of Tennessee Williams' play. Have never read the play, or seen it staged. Should I?

I absolutely loved the film.

Definitely couldn't hurt, but after seeing the movie you're bound to be disapointed by any other actors playing those roles. Brando, Karl Malden and Kim Hunter all were in the original Broadway production.

As for Streetcar just in terms of a read don't know how enjoyable that would be.

Like most plays, its meant to be performed, not just read. And Brando is Stanley Kowalski, any other attempt is going to seem lame-o.

this reminds me, as per our sean penn discussion yesterday, that that hawke guy is going to be in the off-broadway production of Hurly Burly soon, and he mentioned on the Today show this morning that the original staging of it had keitel, hurt and walken in it. how awesome must that have been?!
