A genre I know very little about, but would like to. Potentially very annoying, but more likely to ruin any dancefloor. Please share what you know and like of this sound, and I'll check it out.

Downloading some Yellowman at the mo'.

Some asshat on the Sound Opinions board posted a thread about dancehall just the other day.

It's a genre that I cannot get into no matter how hard I try. If you find dancehall that sounds like the thermals or maybe lcd soundsystem, let me know.

I at one time had an EP by an artist (can't remember the name) that described the music as "Death Metal, Dancehall Hip-hop." The strangest thing about it: it really was death metal dancehall hip-hop! Wish I still had it.

i'm not a huge dancehall fan, but certainly that's the main reason it exists. when i DJ'ed i always saved my half hour dancehall set for the peak of the night to get people moving.

I've tried to get into dancehall and its derivations off and on for many years but always realize I'm a rock steady mon.

For a white guy.

Its definitely my least favorite form of reggae. Yellowman is one of the few artists who is undeniably dancehall that I really like. There are other guys I like to varying degrees who i guess could be considered first wave dancehall artists (eg I Roy, Frankie Paul, Freddie McGregor, U Roy, Sugar Minnott, Barrington Levy, Michigan & Smiley, Eek A Mouse, Half Pint). But while these guys were toasters, the music was very rooted in roots reggae which I prefer to think of it as. At somepoint, dancehall became much faster paced with more rapping and less toasting. That kind of more modern dancehall as done by guys like Shabba Ranks completely blows.

Yellowman's on the right track.

Not a huge dancehall fan, but wanna mention that Eek-A-Mouse's Wa Do Dem album is really fun, early dancehall.

I actually like Shaggy quite a bit, a greatest hits collection is plenty though. Beanie Man is decent. There's Bounty Killer, BuJu Banton. Shinehead's a good mix of hip-hop and dancehall.

Dancehall is one of the few types of music that gets me on the dancefloor. I guess it's all that bass. I've liked it since I was a teenager & went to Jamaica. But I agree it's a very strong spice---you only need a little sprinkle---after that it's better to move on to something else. I bought a couple of compilations in Jamaica but it's not really the kind of thing I'd put on at home--at least not for longer than about 10 mins.

I agree with the above: Beanie Man, Bounty Killa, BuJu Banton. And there's Lady Saw who's pretty wicked. From those I'd say BuJu Banton is the most listenable over an extended period of time.

Not the biggest Shaggy fan.

I can't remember. Are you in to Roots Mahuuuuva? He's got quite a bit of dancehall influence.

Trim body girl.....

GGGYEAH, for sure I like the Mahuda. The thing that gets me is, yeah, the bass, but more so that 3-beat stutter rhythm, dum-dum-DEE-dum-dum-POP, ha.

That and afro-beat make it impossible for me to avoid dancing. No choice.

anyway on the dancehall tip...there is a recent compiliation that got released called Dynamite! Danacehall Style and it's actually one of the best summations of the genre I've seen. Really good.

I don't like danccehall all that much, but I dug yellowman in the day. Fun concert.
zunguzungguguguzungguzeng was a great tune. "I am de most bohtiful mon in de world!"

Ee-ka-Mouse would probably be my next mention. Juicy Juicy Weedie Weedie Weedie was a good party tune in the day.

Never heard his music, but is Matisyahu dancehall?
