It is a little odd they wouldn't have a Chicago area date. I'm used to people skipping out on my area, and they are playing a show in Lawrence, which is relatively close.

They're horrible live. Such a shame because they're my #3 favorite band of all time.

This is a misleading statement.
They are just extremely inconsistent.
I've seen them twice: first time was one of the best shows I've ever seen - ever; second time was one of the worst - ever.

Reports from other sources appear to confirm my experiences as very typical.

So, I would say that if you love them, it is definitely worth it to give the live Yo La experience another chance. When they are not filling the night with (nothing but) atonal feedback jams, they are simply remarkable.

the two chicago shows they've played in the last two years have been snorefests.

Damn.
When I saw them at Metro, they were totally communicative with the audience, and played a WIDE variety of their songs, covering a ton of styles, from all periods of their career. There were a couple of feedback jams, but none got too long or overindulgent.

Choice covers included: Grand Funk - "We're An American Band" and Jackson Browne - "Somebody's Baby". The latter was a revelation.

Hopefully you'll go again and they'll be on, this time.

Saw them at Other Music in Harvard Square back in 2000 and it was great.

I've seen them three times and all three have been disappointing. That's okay, though. I love their recorded material enough to ignore the fact that their live shows put me in a deep sleep.

I've seen them 4 times, 2 of those (including the most recent one) were some of the best shows I've ever seen.

Jasmine, that p4k show did suck.

i think their shows have been snorefests because they've been promoting a string of somber slow albums. if they go back to rocking out they should be great.

Have you been to their shows or do you just assume this? I have seen the last 4-5 times that they've come through the bay area, and while they will do the slow songs, they always rock out... in fact the last couple of times Ira kept the frenetic psychedelica feedback going so long that Georgia stopped drumming to wait for him to behave.
