I asked this question a while back, and people told me to get "I can hear the heart beating as one" first, which was a great suggestion. I got it and loved it, then moved on to "And then nothing turned itself inside-out", which may be a better album, but I'm not sure if it would be a good intro to the band.

I also have their new one; I still need to get electro-pura and some of the other ones.

i'd start with the new one, then "inside-out".

I have always liked them in moderation and for the occassional tune, but I've never been a huge fan either. I've have a few albums in my collection, but they aren't ones I frequently listen to.

2. Painful
3. Electro-pura
4. I Am Not Afraid of You and I will Beat Your Ass
5. ...And Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out

those are the essentials...

I would switch 1&2 and then 3&5, but yeah. This is what you need. The Today is the Day EP is excellent, too.

Timis, this is finally something I can give you in return for all the music you give me. Do you want me to upload some YLT for you tonight?

Fakebook is one of my favorites, as well. And might be an excellent introduction.

Although I think the two best intros, are actually:
I Am Not Afraid Of You...
and
Electr-O-Pura

as those two pretty much cover all the broad stylistic ground that the band has covered over the years. None of their other albums really give the broad overview of their sound like those two do, IMO.

'May I Sing With Me' from '92 is my favorite. Standout track is 'Always Something.'

this was my first album of theirs and it's not much of an introduction. It sound almost nothing like anything else they did and doesn't even hint at the parts that make me love them.

i like it, but it kind of stands on it's own outside of the band.

Electr-O-Pura is the best in my opinion. I love this album. I Can Hear The Heart Beating is second.

I will beat your ass... is almost a summary of all the styles of their career, for that reason it's a pretty good intro.

But I can't imagine liking one Yo and not liking the others.

i think we got it right here, although the new one probably challenged I Can Hear The Heart for the exact reason someone stated above, that it pretty much gives a sampler of all their styles and does a really good job of presenting each one. That first track is freaking killer.

That and Painful. Those are the only one I would consider must owns. I enjoy them all for the most part, but in all honesty, when I feel like YLT, these are the two I'm grabbing for, particularly the latter.

My intro was And then nothing... and it was awesome, in a late college night listening kind of way.

The first song I remember hearing was "Upside-Down" fom May I Sing With Me? Simply a perfect pop song that is just a bit too close to Herman's Hermits "Something Good." Didn't get the album. (In hindsight, a good choice, as the rest of the album is - for the most part - a spiky, uncomfortable noisefest.)

I also spun the SOL recording of YLT backing Daniel Johnston (phoning in the vocals, literally) on "Speeding Motorcycle" live on thhe air at WFMU. And that turned me on to Danny, but I still wasn't ready to buy a Yo La album.

But then I heard "Tom Courtenay" and had to go out and buy Electr-O-Pura.
