I know some of you are anti, but I think these dudes bring the mong like no one else operating today. Got this from their mailing list today:

things have been quiet for THE STROKES, but it's starting to get busy
again...here's some news.
-------
The 5 members of the THE STROKES have been in their recording studio
here in NYC making the third album.
They're about 5 songs into it right now, and they're working with a new
producer....DAVID KAHNE.
No word on when they'll be finished, it will take as long as it takes,
but we're confident that it will come out sometime this year.

This'll probably be my #1, unless the y go all gar and get "experimental" on me.

i heard june 14 as a preliminary tentative date. of course, that won't be happening if they're only 5 songs into it.

Because the other two albums were easily my faves from those years. Therefore, if and when it comes out, this one is the prohibitive fave to be 05's #1.

Dig?

The multi-talented David Kahne has produced some of the biggest names in the business: Tony Bennett, Stevie Nicks, Sublime, Sugar Ray, K.D. Lang, and The Bangles, not to mention Paul Mc Cartney and his recent album, “Driving Rain.” He was awarded a Grammy in 1994 for producing the Album of the Year, Tony Bennett’s “MTV Unplugged.” He has also produced songs for “Vanilla Sky,” “Orange County,” “The Beach,” “Clockstoppers,” and a variety of other films and television shows. However, his career in the industry started on the opposite side of the mixing console.

A self-taught musician, Kahne began playing guitar, bass, and banjo while still in high school. He soon landed a record deal at Capitol, but quickly decided that performing didn’t suit him. Fueled by the desire to defy the limits of engineering, he took a job at Hyde Street Recording in San Francisco and taught himself how to run the console. He started producing demos for local bands, many of which turned into albums and paved the way for his career as a producer.

Kahne later transitioned into A&R, and spent many years working in the field at both Columbia and Warner Bros. Records. The positions gave him the unique ability to support records from the inside, and the influx of new musical ideas kept his producing efforts fresh and ahead of the curve. However, producing remained his first love, which motivated him to leave Warner Bros. to return to full-time independent production. He relishes his newfound freedom and loves the hands-on creativity the job brings.

-----

Mark McGrath has called him "our George Martin," as a result of his work on their hit records.

interesting choice.

i like McGrath. he gets the joke.

i dunno, if Julian is looking to expand their sound somewhat and try on additional styles - like he did successfully with under control - a guy like Kahne would be an ideal choice. but, if they're looking to make their sound more accessible (?), yeah...not so sure.

i dont' think room on fire sounds that much like the first, the production on the vocals is the same, but the songs are pretty different.

it's clearly the strokes, but it's a different album.

I think he was also the dude behind 415 Records in the 80's . Red Rockers, Romeo Void, etc.

David Kahne was also the guy at 'Reprise' that rejected Wilco's 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"

Biggest. Brain fart. Ever.

I dunno about EVER. I'd say that title would have to go to all the labels that passed on the Beatles.

So, did he come up with the marketing ploy of the 'rejection,' or did they just pin the blame on him?
