I heard one of the runners interviewed just after arriving back in the states.

111 days + 4300 miles + Sahara desert = damn.

The guy said that in order for him to have maintained his body weight from the beginning of the trip he would have had to have eaten about 10,000 calories a day. Not only that, but they said they averaged about 2 marathons worth of running a day.

it makes me sick to know that I get winded walking up a couple flights of stairs and these dudes can run across a damn desert. haha.

That kind of extreme mileage with little to no recovery time is often terrible for the human body. Still, it's damn impressive.

10,000 calories a day is also what the sled dogs doing the Iditarod need.

Kwinky-dink?

I watched sometime last year a doc on ultra marathon runners, and one race in particular through Death Valley. So hot, that they had to change their shoes mult. times because their soles were melting. These people are incredible. Very tough though on joints and body (both mentally and physically).

Also, read multiple articles on a guy who ran (!!!) the Appalachian Trail. If you've hiked any part of it...well, you know this is next to suicidal. He said that he was so exhausted at point he saw Dave Matthews' face on trees speaking to him. Good 'shrooms, right?
