Last nite, I was dismissed early from work, as the snow was coming down heavy and the consequent crowd at the movie-house was small, such that only a skeletal staff was needed.

As it was, I did not venture home right-out. Instead, I went to Barnes n' Noble to peruse SPIN and Esquire, the latter with the divine Ms Scarlett on the cover, and then to Alterra, to enjoy a mint latte and peanut-butter n' chocolate cake. Then, it was back to the theatre, to enjoy a showing of Ice Cube's Are We There Yet?

Now, let me say: Cube has completed the 180. It is not just that I cannot see him penning another Straight Outta Compton or AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted; I can't even see him doing another Three Kings.

Plus, I think he's on PCP.

To wit:

he has a running dialogue with a Satchel Paige bobble-head; he attempts to jump a car in the middle of a torrential downpour; he is not only the employer, at this sports collectibles shop, of Jay Mohr, but he plays in a rec basketball league with same; he has an open-mind for Mr Mohr's love advice; he allows a woman to convince him to watch her kids while she's gone, where before he wouldn't even pay for one to get her hair and her nails done; he bribes a mechanic to replace his tires and rims, instead of pistol-whipping him into it.

Jeebus.

At least, now I know who has gone softer, among Ice Cube and Johnny Rotten. I mean, would the good-man Lydon pull this shit? Make a road-movie about taking his lady-friend's kids on a trip from Camden to Leicester, or something? Fuck no!

Neither should have Cube.

Neither should have Cube.

Not that I really defend this, but it's not as though he wrote it, right? I teach a grade two class right now, and they are excited to see it. I couldn't help thinging - THAT is who they think Ice Cube is. Imagine what they will think in 10 years when they hear his NWA. I am trying to picture people my age discovering that Bill Cosby was a heroin addicted Jazz artist in the 50's or something.

I'm old enough to think of Cosby as the cool dude from I Spy. I don't think of him first as the middle aged-sitcom guy.

Why do actors make movies with kids? Is it written in the contract? Do they have to make a bad movie? Do the movie studios need cut-out-bin-fodder?

See, just goes to show you. I think of the Cosby Show, you think of I Spy. Most of us think of NWA, these kids will think of "Are We There Yet"

We totally win!

I also remember The Bill Cosby Show, which was like The White Shadow, only Black. (Then there was Fat Albert, Picture Pages, The Electric Company, Cos, Cosby and The Cosby Mysteries, not to mention the movies with Sidney Poitier).

But Cosby to me will always be the hilarious dude from his comedy records. On vinyl.

I think Cube has set a bit of a movie legacy with the Friday movies. And Three Kings will be run on cable for all eternity. Err..and then there's that Anaconda film.
