And it's from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, no less.

My favorite quirks are;
1. listing Creed's "Human Clay" (#95) one spot ahead of "London Calling."
2. Putting "Big Willie Style" two spots above "Nation of Millions..."

http://www.definitive200.com/200_list.php

Can't cut & paste the whole thing cuz the formatting's a bitch.

Can't imagine many lists have Kenny G and NWA right next to each other though. Appreesh. ;)

EDIT: At least they picked the right Tool album.

They were actually talking about this on the radio yesterday.

They were saying that Forbes magazine must've been involved. You have to have sold a minimum of 10 million to be in the top 20.

Are these just being ranked on the amount of influence they had or quality?

If it's the former, I guess I can maybe see Shania Twain being ranked ahead of Rumours and The Wall. If it's the latter, I don't understand.

I'll have to check this out later, but about 10 years ago the Hall put out a "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" list that was actually really good, so I'm surprised about this one.

Least it's a thread about music.

More than some can say.

Oh i agree its a shitty list and all, I was just pointing out that its a little hypocritical and sanctimonious to make fun of things like creed, dave matthews band and big willie style but complain if some people here are vocal about their dislike of albums that are more popular here.

But i've got no problem with the thread itself. Anything should be fair game for criticism, debate and discussion.

It's obvious that the Hall was trying to take a look at:
A) all eras
B) commercial, as well as independent music (mostly commercial)

Within those criteria, I have no issue with this list.
The soundtrack to Grease is pretty essential for people who like that kind of music. It's memorable, of its time, and better than a lot of other broadway-style soundtrack music that's been released in the rock era.

No, it's not the records we would pick... or even what s shitrag like Rolling Stone would pick, but it's a list for "most people". And we listen to a helluva lot more music than "most people."

EDIT: I did roll my eyes and chuckle at Kenny G @ #107, though.

No qualms here over good-natured, oft-irreverent discussion. That should be a sort of mission statement for this place. Why I came to CMJ to begin with why I've stuck around.

But when the tone gets unrelentingly hostile and personal, I bristle. No one comes here to get constantly shit on by people who out of the same mouth gripe about the quality of discussion that goes on.

Some kinda cool points, at least in my opinion--

Grateful Dead's American Beauty at 20

While the ordering is bad, and the artist admissions are even worse (Norah Jones? 50 Cent?) we can probably all agree that a majority of the artists on there deserve to placed on a top 200 list somewhere. Perhaps not the album(s) chosen, but nevertheless.

I'm not sure i'm interpreting this right, but if you mean 50+ % of the artists should have an album on most of our top 200s, I'd say not a chance. If you're trying to say that only 50% of the choices are truly lol bad...then maybe.

Ok, Billy you got me...I went back and did a count and about 52 different artists from the list would make a list in my eyes. I didn't count people I would lump in jazz, or country (for the most part) though.

*edit* I should say though that it obviously is on a sliding scale--depending on influences/best albums/etc, not to mention how many we were counting to
