That's right folks. I'll be heading out to The Golden State this weekend and touring the state for 11 days and I need the Cali obners help.

I'm going to be out there for work. I'm working the Tour of California bike race so I will be at a different city every day but I'm only staying in a few cities and traveling to each stop.

If anybody is near any of these places please let me know and I'll give you more info as to where I'll be. If you're in the city that I'm staying in and want to try and meet up let me know as well.

Also, any suggestions of good places to eat, bars, record stores, points of interest, for any of these cities would be appreciated.

Here is where I'll be during the day, near the finish line of each race at the Lifestyle Expos:

Saturday 17th: Fly in to San Francisco, no plans
Sunday 18th: San Francisco
Monday 19th: Santa Rosa
Tuesday 20th: Sacramento
Wednesday 21st: San Jose
Thursday 22nd: San Luis Obispo
Friday 23rd: Solvang
Saturday 24th: Santa Clarita
Sunday 25th: Long Beach
Monday: Sales Calls around LA
Tuesday: Sales Calls around LA, fly out

Here is where I'll be at night. Where my hotels are:

Saturday 17th: Downtown San Fran
Sunday 18th: Downtown San Fran
Monday 19th: Sacramento
Tuesday 20th: Sacramento
Wednesday 21st: San Jose
Thursday 22nd: Santa Barbara
Friday 23rd: Santa Barbara
Saturday 24th: Long Beach
Sunday 25th: Long Beach
Monday 26th: Long Beach
Tuesday 27th: fly out

We're going to drive down the PCH from San Jose to San Luis Obispo on the 22nd and try to stop off at Big Sur, time permitting. After the Santa Clarita stage we'll probably stop off somewhere in LA for dinner and whatever before we head down to Long Beach to our hotel.

My schedule will be hectic and we only have 1 van that is hauling me and 2 other people around the state but we're free to do whatever at night.

Also, as an incentive to get anyone to come to one of the finish lines, I can probably get you free beer.

It would be great to take you out for a beer when you're here. Problem is, I am going to be really busy all weekend, so I'm not sure how I can make this work...perhaps if you are around before 7:00 on Saturday, we could meet up at a bar by my house, which is also next to Amoeba.

As for bars, restaurants, nightlife, etc., I can certainly give you suggestions but it would help to understand what kind of thing you are into. Do you like to spend money at really nice places? Do you like crowded bars that are popping off or do you prefer places that are more relaxed and chill? etc.

Also, not sure if you're into them, but The Autumn Defense is playing on Saturday. I won't be able to go though.

What is this I hear about magical free beer? I'm in LA. Post more about your schedule later on and we can try to meet up. I think I might be down in Long Beach that weekend a little bit.

Amoeba is the obvious record store to hit in CA. There's 3 -- Hollywood, SF, & Berkeley. Sounds like it might be a lot easier for you to hit the SF one than the Hollywood one. Fingerprints in Long Beach has a good repututation for a small indie store, but i've never been.

I'll come back to this thread later for food and drink recs.

Fingerprints kicks ass.

SF Amoeba is pretty good. I think the Hollywood one is the best one though. The one in Berkeley left lots to be desired, IMO.

Yeah, it's not worth it to go to the Berkeley Amoeba if you are going to visit the SF one. And it's not worth it to go to any other record store in SF. I have been to a few others, and I always feel like I'm cheating on Amoeba.

that's the mark of a great record store - when you feel like you're cheating on it when you go elsewhere.

I'll know a little more closer to next weekend. I don't get done until around 5 or so on Saturday in Santa Clarita. I don't know how far way that is. I don't care about going to super nice restaurants (gotta make SOME money on per diem). Any joints with a good reputation for good food and drink within reason.

I can have a good time in almost any environment but if I'm meeting folks I'd rather go somewhere with a more chill atmosphere and a good juke box.

I'm going to the Pop Levi show that Ish has been hyping.

I can try to hook you up with a VIP braclet that allows you to get into the hospitality tent where there is free food and beer.

Like I said, I'll be cruising into LA Saturday with the intention of hanging in Hollywood/downtown area that night and then heading to Long Beach. I'll be around Sunday and Monday but I have no plans other than my hotel is in Long Beach.

Question: Is it even feasible to take a cab from Downtown LA to Long Beach? Would that be an arm and a leg? I want to know just in case I can't get the van for Saturday night.

Also, you've GOTTA go Mexican while in SoCal. Lotsa quality low cost authentic Mexican restaurants out here.

Looking forward to meeting ya, Ben!

Cool. I need to figure out my own schedule but I'm up for trying to meet.

I'd have to think you'd be looking at a cab rate of between $60-80 between downtown and Long Beach. There actually is a subway you could take from long beach to downtown and back. I'm not sure it would work for you both ways though because it shuts down at or before midnight.

Dude, if you need a ride from Long Beach, I'll go pick ya up and take you back. It's 30 mins from my pad and not far from Downtown LA.

did i hear free beer?!

i'm not working right now (obviously) so if you need rides... i should be available the time you'll be around la. schedule's kinda hectic though between taking care of things but i'd definitely be down to be a tour guide for a day.

and please, do NOT take a cab from downtown la to long beach unless you want to pay a gajillion dollars.

and i also will be at the pop levi gig for a minute... got another thing to go to that night (*ahem tania* - interface - prototype 909!!!)

i won't be online much - but work it out with billy & t, and i'll give them a call when the time gets closer.

Maybe Aquarious, if he were looking for something obscure and expensive.

San Francisco Restaurants

There are so many good restaurants in this city. Here are a few of my favorites.

Luna Park: One of my favorites. Lots of different stuff, check out the website. Valencia and 18th, in the mission.

Cha Cha Cha: Tapas restaurant, absolutely delicious. It's better if you have more people, so that you can order more things. It can be hard to get into on a weekend night. Definitely get the sangria. Two locations: Haight and Shrader (same block as Amoeba, in the Upper Haight) and Mission between 19th and 20th (I haven't been to that location). Website.

La Mediterranee: Mediterranean food (obvy). The lamb moussaka is awesome. In pacific heights (fillmore and sacramento).

The Slanted Door: Asian-fusion. Delicious. Since you're going to be downtown, this may be a good option -- it's at the end of market street, across the embarcadero, in the ferry building. REALLY expensive though (it's the kind of place that has bathroom attendants), but if you can put it on the company card or something, then I highly recommend it! Website.

Cheap eats
First of all, keep in mind that "cheap" in SF is very relative...I'm talking around $10 here, give or take. Also, keep in mind that most things close fairly early -- late at night, your choices are either mexican or pizza.

Having lived in San Diego for five years, I'm kinda spoiled and I think that SF mexican food sucks, but I also seem to be alone in that opinion among my peers. For a burrito, the mission is your best bet -- Cancun is really good (mission and 19th), as is El Farolito (mission and 24th). Don't go to the mexican places in the haight, they suck.

There are a ton of crepe places all over the city, all of which are really good. There's one at carl and cole in the upper haight, there's cafe neon in the panhandle, squat and gobble (they have a few locations in the city), etc.

Other than that, you're pretty much stuck with whatever shitty pizza place you can find.

Amoeba
Amoeba is located on Haight street at stanyan.

Bars
There are a couple bars in the upper haight that I like. There is Murio's Tropy Room, a block from Amoeba, on the same side of the street. Dog-friendly bar, good jukebox. There is also the golden cane, which is a few blocks up from that, again on the same side of the street. If you go there, make sure to pick up a free book or two in the bookcase. They have some weird deal where they get books from publishers before they go to press, and they just give them away for free.

In the lower haight, there is a bar called the noc noc which is really cool. It's made to look like these weird caves inside. Kinda hard to describe, but it's a pretty chill place and is fun to go to. Plus, they serve Chimay and this really good hefeweizen. There's a bar across the street which is cool too, but I forget the name.

There are a ton of bars in the mission that are good -- you might like Amnesia, that's a cool place. There is also Delirium which some people like, but it's more crowded and it's also hipsterville. Let's see, there's also the elbo room, and kilowatt. The mission is definitely a happening area on the weekends. Lots of bars, lots of people walking around, etc.

Hopefully that helps, and I certainly hope you enjoy your stay in our crazy little city. In terms of my schedule, I am meeting up with my friends tomorrow at 7, but am free any time before that. On Sunday, I am going to the south bay around 6 or 7 probably, but am free any time before that.

Oh, and please don't feed the liberals.

I'd be lying if I said that this was the main reason I'm pushing for the move out there, but it's totally one of them.

Damn fancy. Thanks for all that. I like that all your recommendations are in relation to Amoeba.

I'll be free most of the day Saturday but I'm going to try to check out Golden Gate in the afternoon. Sounds like I'll be in the Mission that night.

I think it's good, and I'm from San Diego. My favorite place was...fuck, I can't remember what it was called. It's on Church street @ Market, across the street from the Safeway. Cancun is good too. What I like about burritos in SF is they include rice as one of the standard ingrediants.

Rice doesn't belong in burritos.

One of the things that scares me about moving to SF is the Mexican food. Everyone I know that did the So Cal to Nor Cal switch complained about the Mexican food.

I just have this image of me spending a few years of eating nothing but Trader Joe's Mac n Cheese & sandwiches from Submarine Center
