he just got suspended for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, if they make it. a richly deserved penalty.

Simon suspended for rest of season for vicious attack

TORONTO (Reuters) - New York Islanders enforcer Chris Simon was suspended for the remainder of the regular season games and the Stanley Cup playoffs by the NHL on Sunday for his vicious attack on NY Rangers' Ryan Hollweg.

The suspension amounts to one of the longest in NHL history counting 15 regular season games and as many as 28 playoff contests if the Islanders advance all the way to the Stanley Cup.

If the Islanders fail to make the post-season, or play fewer than 10 playoff games, Simon will serve additional games at the start of the 2007-08 regular season making the suspension a minimum of 25 games.

"The National Hockey League will not accept the use of a stick in the manner and fashion in which Mr. Simon used his Thursday night," said Colin Campbell, NHL senior executive vice president and director of hockey operations, in a statement.

"As a consequence of his actions, Mr. Simon has forfeited the privilege of playing in an NHL game again this season, regardless of how many games the Islanders ultimately play."

Simon was assessed a match penalty for a deliberate attempt to injure and suspended indefinitely on Thursday after striking Hollweg in the face with his stick during the Islanders 2-1 loss to the Rangers.

The thing that takes me out is Simon is a fighter, and not really a cheap shot type of guy, so I don't know why he didn't just grab Hollwig and beat his @ss instead of taking his head off with the stick..

yeah. whooptie doo. So he don't get paid for the games he can't play in. I think the dude should be arrested. The fella that hit Brashear like that a while back made it a career ender. Although hockey has moments of high intensity and violence, there is no room for swinging a stick purposefully into someones face like that. A little lower and he could have died.

In real life, a hit like that is a felony.

I watched that game. I was flipping back and forth to Heroes, but that was one of the best hockey games i have seen in a long time. DiPietro had 56 saves on 57 shots before the SO loss. The man was amazing that night. Too bad he couldn't get the win.
