Maybe not turning in a fucking SERIAL KILLER is taking this "not talking to the cops" shit too far.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/04/ ... 4565.shtml

Interesting piece, that a few years ago may have started a mega thread around here.

"And this is what black people in America have not come to grips with. If we had a bunch a people in robes saying this stuff, there would be a movement all over America to shut this thing down. That it's young black millionaires, we are doing nothing."

= best line so far.

I didn't watch this, so I'm going off what I've seen on the topic.

Anderson Cooper should've lobbed him the serial killer question, and then got him with "would you turn in a pedophile?" Then, if this was done after the VT shooting, and this probably would be in bad taste, but would've shown the stupidity in his answer on serial killer--asked him if he would've turned in the VT shooter.

I find it interesting that they even interviewed him. He hasn't been at the forefront for a bit, and according to a friend, his last album hasn't sold for crap. Get me Jay-Z or Nas, or Jeezy, or hell Lil' Wayne and maybe I'll listen.

There's a Smith & Wesson plant about 45 miles south of me, and, yeah it's mostly white guys making the bullets, Cam'ron. But those whitey Yanks don't carry your gun around for you or pull the trigger.

Though if you paid then more than 14.50 an hour they might.

I really couldn't tolerate living anywhere where "they's just the rules."

Yep, yet they'll toss Imus for making an offhand, off-color crack. I'd be interested in hearing what Dalen has to say on this topic.

I am surprised that they didn't interview more rappers from different communities, but Cam was probably the only one crazy enough to comment.

Like any other complex subject, the media is just gonna jump on the easy story, get it all mixed up and attack some preposterous "solution" that they can easily sell and package as news.

Personally, I'm of a mind rap artists can and should say whatever the hell they want. Censorship has no place in a free society. Conversely, people have every right to say that these lyrices are horrible and speak out against what they are saying. But, elevating rap music to such a level that we find it is the root of a problem as pervasive and long-standing as violence in urban community and disrespect toward women is as preposterous as acting like some radio DJ in 2007 is the root of racism.

The issues at hand are, among others, the complexity of race and sex in America and black on black violence in urban America, not a simplistic and obvious target like rap music. Blaming rap music for violence and race problems in America is no more short-sighted and wrong headed than blaming Don Imus for racism.

But, it's a lot easier to rail against rappers than it is to address a society that adores violence and tough guy poses across the board, from a president dressing in military costume to give a speech off a battleship to litte kids bragging about who beat up who in the lunchroom.

Should black communities trust the police more and tell them when crimes are tearing apart their neighborhoods? Sure, but years of police brutality and unfair treatment make this a real hard sell. Ever live in a mostly black bneighborhood and get subjected to sweeps where the cops block off a few blacks and just start going door to door, peeking around and looking in your windows? Think this sort of behavior, coupled with police brutality occuring regularly across the country engenders trust of the police? But, again, easier to just blame rap music than address real problems.

And, the black community needs to stop blaming all this shit on racism. Does the criminal justice system tend to favor whites? Yes. Does that give you the right to kill your own people? No. Does selling dope and playing with guns make your neighborhood better or worse? Does our society, black and white, promote the sort of greed that makes young men not care what they are doing to their neighborhoods if they make their money?

But, calling the black community out on shit that has been happening before rap music became such a dominant cultural force and expecting black leaders to address real problems when they can get much better press coverage and attention by worrying more about what white people say about them than what they are doing to each other takes more than a sound bite.

Do we live in a deeply flawed society that favors violence and the means justify the ends above all else? Does white society view black society as something somehow removed from the rest of the culture and care little for its problems? Do blacks themselves need to start taking more responsibility for the problems in their own communities than they do now?

Yes, Yes, and Yes, but fuck it....easier to just blame rap music...and Don Imus.
