The muthafuka has a lot of cds. I own John Zorn's Cobra - Live At The Knitting Factory and I love the song "Naja Naja Atra," which is track two. It reminds me of a mix of Harry Partch and early The Residents. Does he have any single CD which would be along the lines of that song?

Can you possibly upload that song?

I don't really have much John Zorn (that I've really listened to) other than Naked City and Masada stuff, but I might know of something.

Well, it's really pretty unlikely that I will, but I doubt a whole lot of people on here are gonna have really broad knowledge of John Zorn.

Yr probably right on the account of not many people being able to spout out about Zorn. I'm actually surprised that he isn't an artist I've tried to explore. I guess I'm probably in the same boat--huge catalog=confusion.

I only have his Filmworks: 1986-90 but it is an impressively crazy album. I really need to get more of his stuff.

The Naked City CDs are pretty amazing, but not for the faint-of-heart. Lots of noise and screaming and atonal stuff, but there is also a lot of melody in there for the listener that is willing to sit and get past the barrage. Makes it a very rewarding listen.

I also like the Masada series a lot. More listenable jazz with Middle Eastern and klezmer accents.

Cool. Downloading now, and I'll let you know if I have any ideas.

OK, well the short answer is that I have no idea. Kinda figured that might be the case.

However, I think Zorn's Cobra stuff may be fairly unique within his discography. I've got some of his Cobra studio stuff on my computer at home that I could try to compare to this. I've listened to it maybe once, but I seem to remember it being somewhat similar.

Other than that, I can only say that his Filmworks, Naked City, and Masada stuff is nothing like this. Some of his early "game" (or sports?) works may bear some resemblance, but I've never heard any of those.

And, really, this is what I should have said to begin with:

Go here. Do a quick search in the "I Hate Music" forum and in the archives. If there's not already a general John Zorn thread in the main forum, start one up and ask the people over there about this. I'm sure they'll come up with some suggestions.

Oh, and I take back what I said about the Filmworks stuff. Some of it may be kind of like this, but none of what I've heard is.

naked city spanned a lot of diff't styles, sometimes within an album, sometimes within a 23 second outburst. i actually saw their final set at the old knitfac back in the last millenium. it was amazing. used to see zorn w/ frith/frisell/eye/baron or any combination thereof playing gigs there all the time. those were some sick fucking shows.
sadly, havent kept up with zorn's work much since then. everytime a human being sneezes, anywhere, it seems like zorn's put out another album. between that & running the stone i have no idea how the guy does it.

I know, but rare is the opportunity to mix in a Jim Zorn reference.
